I have kept hamsters since I was a little girl but this is the first time that I have had one have an illness. Cody is a russian dwarf hamster. He is 20 weeks old. He has lived with his brother Randy since birth and they are besties. Cody has always been a fussy eater ever since he was a baby. I have always managed to satisfy his appetite until very recently it got to the point where he stopped eating his food bar a few treats. I hand fed him as much as he would take and purchased a new brand of food which he (yay!) is crazy about. So he is eating and drinking fine now. However, last night I noticed that his left eye was swollen. I took him to the vet today. Obviously, my vets couldn't say much. She said she could only treat him generally but I would have to see a specialist (in a completely different part of Ireland) in case there was something more sinister going on. She gave me an oral antibiotic that he should have once a day as well as a cream for his eyes to be applied twice a day. Here are the facts: he is behaving the same, (perhaps a little bit tamer but then I think that is more to do with the fact that he has been getting used to me hand feeding him than him feeling tired), it is not contagious as Randy is in perfect health, there has been no diarrhoea, he is moving about and sleeping the same, drinking and eating plenty. I thought maybe his coat was ruffled but I think that might have been something I read about here and then started questioning it. Also, he doesn't look ill. He looks well - just like he has an eye infection in his left eye. I tend to think that maybe it is more a dietary issue from when he was a little more of a fussy eater? Like how we can get infections if we are lacking in certain minerals or vitamins? I am wondering what other opinions are...could this be something more sinister? dots617 replied to dots617 Dwarf hamster ID please~ http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860372&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860372&GetAllPosts=1 Tue, 31 Jan 2012, 23:43:39 dots617 - Hi everyone! I am a proud owner of a momma opal, a litter of 6 opal pearls, and a daddy unknown. I started off raising the dad alone but because I was going away for vacation, I decided to get a furry friend for him. When he didn't change coat colors, I was fairly sure that he was a Campbell so I got him an opal friend. When I came back from vacation I found the opal pregnant and presto! 6 opal pearl pups :) So now my question is, is the dad for sure a Campbell? His coat is all white with a yellowish brown dorsal stripe down his back and the stripe makes an arrow-like shape on his forehead. The reason I'm asking is because now that the pups are weaned, some of my friends are taking an interest in adopting a few. I know that if the pups are hybrids, its not advisable for them to breed. My initial intentions were to take care of them all but now I really want to spread the cuteness :D Please help me find out what species my hamster is! So I was wondering if there was a meaning to it ? It doesn't sound too stressful, the sound is kind of similar to a new born kitten. My Dwarf Hamster is healthy and doesn't have a weird behavior except for those screams . . . kittycats123 replied to Lee New Hamster Cagemates http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860366&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860366&GetAllPosts=1 Thu, 26 Jan 2012, 21:15:05 Lee - Hey there everybody! I'm Lee, and I'm a mommy to two lovely Russian Dwarf Hamsters, Rei and Mari. Rei I've had for about three months, and she's full-grown, but I believe Mari is just a baby... she's extremely small. In any case, I just got her today and the two of them seem to be getting along well; they have a double-cage attachment set-up, so there's more than enough space, and little Mari seems to be following Rei around. My question was about play-fighting, though. I've been watching them to make sure they get along, and they've been rolling around and everything. Mari tends to squeak while she's doing it though... is this normal? Rei is not vocal at all, and it seems like Mari is the opposite, so I just want to make sure no one's getting hurt. I should add Mari has been squeaky about everything; fighting, me picking her up, and all that. She has not been biting though (at worst, she bats at me with her paws). Thank you for any help! kittycats123 replied to gazpache Biting wheel? http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860349&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860349&GetAllPosts=1 Tue, 17 Jan 2012, 09:20:00 gazpache - I'm a very experienced hamster owner with a conundrum. My hamster Lucy loves to bite her wheel. To the point that she actually chewed through the axle on it and broke it. I had another wheel laying around so I gave that to her. She's taken to biting and chewing on this one now too. She's causing a lot of damage. I've tried giving her things to chew on like sticks, milk bones, carrots, treat sticks, peanuts etc but she still chews on the wheel. I've tried blowing on her to get her to stop, it hasn't worked. I've tried spraying bitter apple and another similar product called fooey on the wheel and she still continues to bite the wheel. She's got lots of toys and gets quite a bit of time out of the cage. So she can't be bored. What else can I do to stop this behaviour? It's driving me crazy! I know when my dog would bite her kennel when she was a pup we put cayenne pepper around where we didn't want her to bite and it stopped her immediately. Can I try that with her wheel or would the pepper be too hard on her? kittycats123 replied to HAMSTERLOVE Hamster oversleepng http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860344&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860344&GetAllPosts=1 Mon, 16 Jan 2012, 16:40:14 HAMSTERLOVE - Every night Sniffy sleeps for a long time before waking up. Here is my background story (sorry kinda long).. I have two boys who have hamsters. Originally we bought some dwarf hamsters for both, well one of my sons has gone through now 5 hamsters :( Where the other one is still on his original hamster. After the 3rd hamster we actually told him that his hamster had passed away (he thought this was the first time) We let him pick a new one out, this time (4th hamster) he picked a white winter hamster out. We fell in love with her!!!! I have never owned a hamster that would snuggle, just sit on your chest, give little licks(kisses)..just so mild tempered. I was wondering if this is common for this bread?? We just found that she has also passed away :( (he does not know). I dont understand why this keeps happening to him!! We are going to replace her in the morning, but I am worried that we won't find one as loving and he will notice something different. We are super psyco about feeding, cleaninig, watering and playing with them so this is why im so upset that the ones we keep replacing keep dying, where the other one is fine. My children are not allowed to handle them with out one of us with them, and actually with the dwarf hamster, because she is so fast and skiddish we don't allow the chilren to handle her at all. The two hamsters are in seperate cages, also. My heart is broken for my son because he loved this little one so much, we have only had her for a little over a month! so I guess I am asking if most white winter hamsters have this sort of temperment and personality or were we just lucky? and any advice to hopefully have this one live as long as my other sons?? The one that is still alive, well we have had her for a year and a half! and in that time will have now gone through 5 for my other son :( I appreciate any help and advice we can get!! I'm new in this forum, but I've been using the website for a while (since I brought Margot home, december/11) She's the sweetest and cutiest ham in the whole world *-*, but today I failed as a mother. She bit my finger - she never did this before - so that scared me so much that I threw her apart and she fell from around 1,70 m, I guess. It didn't even hurt my finger, I'm such an idiot. And she is fine.. I guess. I played with her around a little bit more and she didn't bite me again, but she seemed a little scared, of course. I took her back to her home and gave her food but she's so stressed that she didn't even swallow. She's now in her wheel probably stressed and scared with her cheeks full of food. Now I'm afraid. Is she gonna hate me and bite me all the time? Is she going to be damaged from the fall and be always a little nuts, like all Helena Bonham Carter's characters? Any help'd be appreciated. Thanks. About a few weeks ago, I got him a bigger ball as he had outgrown his old one. Well in that ball was a free pack of new food, it was fiesta mix i think. I made sure it was for hamsters and started feeding him it. I noticed that he was like starting to sleep even more than usual and he started to get a lot more swollen in his stomach. So I changed his food back to what I was feeding him before, hoping it would get better but its been about two weeks and he doesn't seem to be getting any better and I'm really getting concerned. I also make sure he has a vegetable at least once or twice a week. Does anyone have ANY idea whats wrong with him? Also to me it looks like he's swallowed two small golf-balls. As I said I'm really concerned about him. Or is it that I need to get him a bigger cage for him to run around in...or is it that I need to get him a new play buddy. I asked my sister, who has raised 3 hamsters and 1 guinea pig about what was wrong with him and she had no clue. So I am turning to you guys on Hamsterific. Please help! The only time I see him (during the night, since I sleep late because of work duties) up and about is when he's hungry and playing on his wheels. But after around twenty minutes of going about, he goes back to his tissue tube and hides there. Is this a big problem or should I wait it out a little longer? I rescued Screech about a week ago - her owners were busy dumping her in the park. I set her up in her cage, and I did a lot of reading on what to feed her, how to tame her etc. She's not in very good shape - she's thin, her fur is dishevelled, but her eyes at least are bright. I've been trying to get her used to me, but she is extremely aggressive. She'll bite me right through the bars of her cage, and scream at me every chance she gets. I've been washing my hands before I try to handle her, giving her lots of treats, trying to get her to realise I am not the devil, but no luck so far. She does however come when I call her, and take food from me in her "treat" corner. She will also get into and out of her exercise ball without giving me any trouble - I'm hoping that's a good thing? Her previous owners told me she was tame, but then once she had her first litter of babies she became aggressive. She has since has 5 consecutive litters, and has not been handled at all by her previous people. Is there any chance that I can tame her and get her to be nice? Or should I just accept that that is the way she is and not bother her so much? As far as I can tell, she's a Russian dwarf hammie. Silver fur with a black stripe running down her back. I had a wonderful experience with my first Syrian ChiChi, everyone loved her and were always amazed at how tame and friendly she was. She died last year, and I finally decided to try it again because I missed having one so much... So I picked up Einstein (a long haired teddy bear hamster with fluffy white and gray hair) a few weeks ago and was determined to make the best home for him I could. But it seems like no matter how patient I am and no matter how gentle I am that he's making no progress in becoming tame at all. I understand the kind of time it takes because I've done it once before and I haven't even dreamed of trying to hold him yet, but he still acts VERY skiddish of me even though I've been talking to him and giving him treats and giving him plenty of space to adjust to his new home. He was taking treats out of my hand but now he won't. Last week he had a spell where he was walking in circles alot and tilting his head, but since he quit and seems better I figured he was ok. He hasn't done it since, but he does have some strange behaviors. For example he hasn't run on his wheel since the very first day I brought him home, and even for a hamster he stays inside his nest alot. There were several days and nights where he didn't come out at all and it took him a long time to try to drink out of his bottle. He acts very afraid and nervous of everything and everyone, and he nips a lot. He bit me once and later I remembered I'd eaten and hadn't washed my hands so I didn't think much of it, but even when I do wash my hands and approach him very slowly he still tries to bite at me. I really have been patient and gentle with him and done everything I know to do to be considerate of him, but he doesn't seem to be doing any better. I have him in an OVO habitrail habitat suite, and its really roomy with lots of tunnels and places to explore. He has hamster litter, plenty of food, a nice wheel built in (that he won't use) and chew toys and treats regularly. Its been almost a month now and I'm concerned that maybe he's a sickly hamster, or was mistreated in some way that made him nervous of people. Does anyone know anything I could do to make him feel safer around me? puzzle replied to GrimReaper Do Hamsters Store Sperm? http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860148&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860148&GetAllPosts=1 Tue, 27 Sep 2011, 22:33:20 GrimReaper - Someone recently told me that hamsters store sperm for 6 weeks and therefore could become pregnant up to 3 weeks after giving birth. A few days ago, we found four, ten day old pups, 2 are a dark grey-ish brown with black stripes and two are blond/white, with very light grey stripes. The darker two are walking around pretty well, and act accordingly to use touching them. Momma doesn't mind. The lighter two however don't notice us unless we pick them up and momma is more protective of them. I was wondering if anyone had a list of birth-defects is white/blonde whinter whites. I've only had her for 2 weeks! I put her cage on the floor of my room and I put her other cage on the floor of the other room on the top floor (both with food in them) so maybe she'll come back to them? I also put piles of 10 sunflower seeds in various places on the top floor so maybe if she steals one I'll count and know where she is? Would she go down the stairs? My hamster, Sam seems to have a constantly bigger right pouch/cheek. His eating habits haven't changed at all, he doesn't seem to be in pain, he's not acting strange. I got him out and was kind of poking his cheek, and it almost feels like he just is hoarding his little seeds in his pouch? Was just hard, and kind of moveable...and I could feel little bumps. I know that storing food is normal, but is a WEEK normal? The cat has been jumping onto my dresser more lately to watch him, so maybe it's possible he's afraid of the cat stealing his food? Also, put him in his wheel today to clean out his cage, and went to get him with a random piece of corn in his wheel.. Silly Sam. I don't wanna get a tank because of poor circulation but I'm afraid he's still agile enough to squeezethrough the bars of a cavy cage. And what do I do about a house? Several pups are scattered across the aquarium floor. I understand that she is certainly bound to be tired from caring for seven pups, but I am afraid that something is seriously wrong with her. She has lost so much weight and seams to be skin and bones. There is ample food and water in the cage. I also offer her fresh veggies, nuts, and grain cereals. I haven't witnessed her eat in days. I have continued to see her go for the small seeds but also horde bigger things like pumpkin seeds, corn, etc. However, it was watching her nibble on dried apple that was in the mix that troubled me since she would get nowhere with it. I am thinking, "they are short enough now and of proper length, so you can eat it". Tonight, on a whim while handling her, I decided to check her top teeth. In short, she has none, and it looks like they are possibly genetically defective. It looks like one tooth never grew and the other is still like a baby tooth, maybe half a millimeter long. I am seeking advice of what to do now as far as food goes. Should I switch to an all small seed diet like a canary mix or something? She does get vitamin drops in her water and she drinks regularly, but as far as her nutrition from food goes, I am worried now (though somehow relieved to know why she will not eat things like corn, pellets, etc). I'm new to the forum but I've had many many many pocket pets since I was a little kid so I think I know my way around a hamster ball but this has me stumped! Maybe someone here can help... A few months ago I was at a, to put it lightly, "less-than-reputable" pet store killing some time so that I could head over to my "old reliable" neighborhood pet store that I would trust with my own life (we all have one :) ) Anyways I was looking for a new hammie since my lover-boy Henry had recently passed away and I apparently can't live without a fur-ball. While I was at the store I saw a dirty tank (sans food or water I might add) with some sort of strange hairless creature dwelling there in. I took out the dwarf hamster, she was greasy, skinny and so very sweet. She was free and I was in love. A couple days (and many many lab blocks) later she gave birth to 5 babies and managed to raise 3 beautiful sweet boys :) The boys, now 2 months old, couldn't be sweeter or more filled with personality however as they get older they are starting to look greasy (despite their daily sand baths) one is loosing hair (mama's is all grown back) they're all very small and they're starting to exhibit symptoms of diabetes, constant drinking, reduced activity and constant peeing (in a litter-box like good boys :) ). They're fed hazel hamster food with the corn picked out and some fresh veggies most nights. Does anyone have any idea what the prognosis might be? How long can I expect my sweet boys to live? I did have weight measurements of the two of them but I have left this information at her home, I am just looking for any advice that can help rectify the situation, if indeed there is a problem and it’s not just me worrying too much. I believe the weight issue became truly apparent two and half months ago and the hamsters are nine months old. ps There names are Pablo and Nando replied to MrSteve White Eye problem, losing hair http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860003&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860003&GetAllPosts=1 Mon, 20 Jun 2011, 10:41:33 MrSteve - Hi again Ok a while back i told of my hamster Anna getting a white eye problem in the Pupil, well the vets said they could'nt realy do anything about it, if it got to bad they would take out the eye, but i told them no,not unless it got worse, which it never did, it looks like it was a blindness issue, but still not 100pct positive, well this was like last year, since then her other eye has gone white time to time, but not like the other, it kinda goes white then back to black leaving just a kind of pink prick white in her other eye, she seems to be ok still, playing and chewing on her cage, coming for her treats, ect, so she is ok, still kinda naughty at times snatching her food and still trying to bite me time to time, not sure why after 8 months with her.? 2 other hamsters have the white eye issue in 1 eye, Sandy the eldest girl, left eye 1st ever femal hamster i got, now like 1 1/2 years old, and also her son chucky has the same issue, but in his right eye, eye sometimes goes white for a while then back to near normal blackness,,, still not sure what causes this. Even the vets dont know.?? anyone has any idears.?? Another problem is 2 hamster lost a small patch of hair, Reggie the oldest of the group 2 year old, lost a patch of hair, and to one of his daughters Jess also lost some hair, think it might of been caused by Fleas, or parasite, or could be something else, but both are now getting that hair growing back and doing fine.... anyone else had issues like this, please let me know, would like more info on the white eye issues please. replied to MrSteve New Hamster added 2 my Hammy Family http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860002&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=860002&GetAllPosts=1 Mon, 20 Jun 2011, 10:26:46 MrSteve - Hi all, firstly sorry not been on for a while, been having family issues, (Long Story) Wont bore you with that.. lol Ok all my hamsters are still alive and doing well. all 11 of them, but last week i went to buy some stuff from the pet store, i noticed they had loads of hamsters in stock, and that the owner said he made an order (Over ORDER) coz the kids are due to holidays, but her forgot that many kids proberly would be going on holidays, so he was stuck with them and didnt know what to do. I saw a nice long haired hammy i soid i would like to have, but had no cash to buy it, Pet store ower turned round and offered me the hamster FREE of charge, which i tool him up on, when getting it out the cage we thought tere was just the 1 but there was 2, he told me i could have them both but i had to decline, and chose the one i first saw as that one did'nt seem as Vicious, as the other. Anyways got it home and he's been a real tame little fellow, no bites as yet, i had a very small cage at hand which ive placed him in for now, got another larger cage on order which i did this morning while i had some cash in my paypal, not thats empty. (LOL) SO now i have 12 hamsters, 7 Boys 5 Girls. I will try and get some pictures of the new hamster soon, he a long hair, and lookd like that dog Lassy, but i called the hamster Barny,as i was walking past a party shop with him on the way home that same day and saw a Large BARNY toy in the shop window so i decided to call him Barny as lassy kinda sound not to right for him.. Well i be back and around here on the forums again time to time, and will keep you updated on my hamsters all 12 of them,in time. Glad to have found you. So my 4 year olds Russian White Dwarf had a few small wounds on the side of her neck, I thought perhaps a more frequent cage cleaning (it wasn't appearing dirty) would help. And it did, they healed up and she was doing fine. Today she was laying in a different spot in her cage (she does change her sleeping spot and bathroom spots occassionally so not so unusual). I came in and said hello, she sat up and I saw what looks like a huge bulging sore on her abdomen. It almost appears as though something is bursting out, it is red and raw, swollen and she looks like she is biting at it. Her eyes have looked a bit bulged out the last few days. I am the only one that handles her, I wash my hands before and after and have no idea what this might be. She seems ok other than just sitting there, she was alert, but I could see some pink stains from the area pushing on her foot when she was laying down. I am VERY concerned and as it is Sunday night, my 4 year old is now asleep and I can't possibly do anything for Francine until tomorrow morning after I drop her at school. I am honestly not sure what could be done, the wound looks to be about 3/4 inch, not perfectly round but oval. I am not easily made queasy but this certainly did it. Any advice or help is appreciated, I honestly feel like euthanasia is the best option, it doesn't look as though it would heal on it's own and I don't think the vet treats small animals. I would love to be wrong and I hope someone has a wonderful solution. We have had her for about 10 months, and we were told she was 3 months old when we purchased her. Thanks! She hasn't been chewing on the metal bars of the cages. How worried should I be? Is there anything I can do to make her stop? I just cleaned the entire cage with vinegar and there is new bedding and everything. I have been trying to give her a bit of extra attention the past couple of days and put her in her ball more often, but she just keeps chewing. On the upside, she has been much more social lately. Almost every time I open the cage or even walk up to it she will come running and crawl out right onto my hand. This is the one that just a few days ago I was afraid to get near because she was so prone to biting. Another question, how can you tell if they are happy? I try to pay close attention to when their behavior changes. Like when they are in their balls and they start to look a bit frantic, I will put them back in the cage. And I read that if they are cleaning themselves over and over again in a short amount of time, they are usually nervous. Other than that, is there any way to tell if they are happy or not? replied to justkitkat Wild Harvest Products http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859990&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859990&GetAllPosts=1 Sun, 12 Jun 2011, 17:55:37 justkitkat - Walmart sells Wild Harvest items like chews, food, treats, etc. I've heard from another post here that Cheesie Chews contain harmful ingredients like titanium dioxide, propylene glycol, and Fd&C Yellow #6. I researched today and saw that it could be an ear infection but from the sounds of it it looks like a stroke. He's about 2 years old. does anyone have any advice on what to do in this situation? I'm confident that she's tame, I can even handle her.... most of the time. The thing is, she doesn't seem to like it. She doesn't bite, but sometimes she'll do little grumpy things to let me know its not her fav thing. She also seems to get pretty nervous being handled, you can tell her heart rate goes up, and she starts acting scared after a couple of minutes. Like I said, she's really pretty tame. I CAN handle her when I need to without her biting or freaking out too bad, but she gets a little fussy with it. Because she doesn't seem to like it, I've actually limited how often I try. Usually I only handle her when taking her out of her ball before she goes back into her pen. I've owned a hamster before, who loved to be held. They're the same breed/gender so is it just a personality difference? I tamed both the same way, but Daisy started off living in a tunnel ovo habitat and my last hamster lived in a tank (if that has anything at all to do with it). I recently bought two hamsters for my girlfriend. She's been wanting them for a while and we got them spur of the moment without any research. I've been reading up on them after the fact and am learning a lot, but am having a hard time identifying the type of dwarf hamster we bought. I called the pet store and the owner thought maybe they were Chinese dwarf, but didn't really seem to care much or have any idea. I can post pictures later, once they're awake and I'm not disturbing them. But one is tan on top and white underneath with red eyes, and the other is completely white with opal eyes. Neither has a dorsal stripe. Their tail is a fairly long stub for what I'd expect from a hamster, and they seem to have rat-like qualities. The tan's temperament is laid back, almost lazy, and he's receptive to being picked up. The white one is wild as can be and squirms and claws at me when I try to pick it up. At first I thought they were robos because they don't have the dorsal stripe, but I don't think that's possible with one being purely white. Can they get these stripes later? Am I looking at some sort of cross-breed? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I want to be able to cater to their specific needs. paulina replied to darkwind258 Will they Survive? Are they Dwarfs or Syrians.. I got them 2 weeks ago..(Names: Tinker and Terence - both are 8 months old) they had puppies but only two survived (names: Vandy and Tubby - 4 weeks old). Here's the thing.. Tinker and Terence has a length of 5.5 inches (how do we measure their length? I did it using a ruler)... and just by that I can say they're Syrians because they exceeded the measurement of which would tell if they're Dwarf (which only measures for about 8-10 or 10-12 centimeters..right?)... ^^ Now, assuming they're Syrians, how come I can place them together in a cage without any signs of conflicts or fights... They've been living harmoniously since they were pups.. hypothesis: are they some sort of hybrid hammies? Half-Syrian and half-dwarf?? The height/length of a Syrian + the personality of a Dwarf (that enables 'em to live together) ? What do you think?? I've been thinking about this and I can't just TELL or declare this or that.. Turns out he has a quite a few things wrong with him: Dehydration,Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) and possibly Kidney Disease. Now my little guy is spending the night at the Vet. He's going to get Subcutaneous Fluids (fluid via injection) for his dehydration and antibiotics for his Conjunctivitis/Kidney. I agonized over whether or not to spend the money for treatment or just put him down...I really did. The decision became a whole lot easier though once this little magnifying camera showed me a close up of his cute little face, and cute little tongue. It was at that moment I decided I needed to do every thing I could to help him get better. I can't help but wonder though if it was worth spending all that money knowing he might not make it, and even if he does make it he will only live for maybe another year anyway. I just purchased a cute 5 week old Monday (she's been with me for 3days)- we believe to be female lol it's pretty hard to tell. She came from petland, so she is used to being handled. How active should she be? She sleeps alot- I would assume it's normal since they are primarily nocturnal (correct?). She seems fairly active at night. She is still getting used to running in a wheel. At the store- she was in with 5+ other dwarf hamsters and all they had to play with was a small plastic tube. ~Will she be okay being kept alone or do you think she will need a buddy? I've read conflicting info on keeping hamsters together. Some recommend it and some don't- what is best for her or him? Currently I am feeding her Hazel Hamster Food. She gets 1tsp veggies a night. A dried apple slice 2x per week. Do you have any at home recipes you recommend? How good is the brand of food that I am feeding her? Maybe the pet store has a bug problem and when topping up his hamster food containers he dont wash them out, and could be spreading the bugs through out. OR maybe the bugs have been delivered to the pet store and he dont know about it, ive put the food in a bag for now and hope to take this down to my pet store and show him whats i keep getting, as i dont want my hamsters getting sick. My daughter brought it to me, showing me there was blood on it. Apparently, "Winter" spit it up and left it on my daughter's hand while holding her. I understand from reading what I have in a book that hamsters need to grind down their teeth and chew on things. I'm just wondering if this is a normal thing to happen or I should be concerned? I did happen to survive, with frazzled nerves, my daughter deciding that Winter needed a bath. This doesn't seem to be too life threatening at the moment. I just got my dwarf hamster Sammy at the end of December. I was feeding him Kaytee Forti-Diet but then I read that molasses is bad for dwarfs since they are prone to diabetes. The only food I have been able to find that does not have some form of molasses in it is Hazel Hamster, plus there seemed to be a ton of great reviews on it. However, now I am worried as I read about the BHT preservative! And I am not sure if Hazel Hamster is good for my little guy because all the pieces are so huge. So far it's only been a few days and I have mixed the old food with the new. I can't tell if he likes it but he hasn't touched the big pieces. He seems to prefer all the seeds in the Kaytee mix but I'm worried he's not getting all the nutrition. So my question (sorry it's taking so long to get to!) is what really is the best food for dwarf hamsters? I don't want him to have molasses but I don't want BHT either! Is it better to keep mixing the two so he has variety? I was going to stop using the Kaytee but now I don't know. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I don't remember what type he is...he's black and white and was quite a good little guy. We had him since he was a baby and we handled him a lot so he never bit anyone. Anyway, he's been screeching and starting to bite and I thought, well, the house is cold now that it's winter and he's getting old and all of that. He was just awake and seemed interested in playing, so I picked him up and he screeched at me. In the course of holding him I turned him over and there on his belly is the answer: He's got a huge sore (well huge for a hamster). It almost looks like a pumpkin seed stuck to his body (but it's not. He let me feel around a bit and it's definitely soft and part of his body.). There is some green pus around it too. :( So, he's got an infection in addition to whatever else happened down there. We do love him, but I certainly don't have money for a vet visit for him. Are there antibiotics to help him? I know that hamsters don't live very long - is this nature's way for him? I'd put some OTC cream on him, but will he lick it off?? I don't know what to do. I have 3 other dwarfs in my the room with her (she is on one side of the room and them on the other) Should I move them to another room ? 2. Is the whimpering/squeaking sounds I hear normal? (even if I don't hear them very often) 3.A book i have says that it is ok to remove the mom after three days to look and count the babies (it says don't touch them though too). She is a 2 month old dalmation-colored Golden Hamster named Tsubaki. When I bought her, she was in good health, clear eyes, very active, etc. This morning, I noticed one of her eyes is gunky and mostly shut. The other one is just fine. She has an appetite and is behaving normally. I'm really worried that she might have a cold, allergies or have poked it somehow. The temperature in my apartment gets down to about 50 when I'm not at home and at night, but she has a small animal heater beneath the corner of her cage where her hamster house is. Also, I am using hemp bedding, which I am slightly allergic to. Do you think this might be the problem? I was thinking to take her to the vet this morning, but she is just beginning to trust me, and I know that this would set us back. He has one bottom tooth that I clip every couple days so it doesn't cause him discomfort (it grows very very fast with no other teeth to keep it aligned right). I'm just seeking advice on keeping his diet good and hopefully plumping him up. I just ground up some Mazuri pellet and mixed it with oats (his favorite!) and he's been sustaining on that. I've offered him turkey and chicken baby food, which he doesn't really like. Any other flavors anyone would suggest? I'm going to purchase him some plain yogurt to mix in. Any advice is welcome. I've already taken him to the vet. I'm just looking for some variety and to see what everyone else has tried. I recently got a Syrian hamster with my boyfriend, her name is Nuvola and she's about 6 months old. When we first got her, she had no problems at all however after a few weeks she began weeing and pooing in her house that she sleeps in. Because of this we have to change her bedding more frequently than normal, which may only fuel the problem but I don't know what to do. Even if she poos in other parts of her cage she seems to bring it into her house. I've had hamsters in the past and never had this kind of problem before. Has anyone any advice on this? Other than this behavior she keeps herself very clean, she has no signs of any illnesses but we very worried about her. Any advice would be brilliant, thank so much! It's a small bin cage but since I am visiting the folks for the holidays they have a better set-up there, where my current syrian is staying. I don't think I'm missing anything. I picked up a small silent spinner (4.5in) although I question if it's big enough but we will see (it can be exchanged). I picked up an exercise ball (will need a second soon) to use as a nesting area in the mean-time and of course water bottle, and food dish. There are plenty of toys for the cage at my folk's so I did not pick up anything like that. Now - I have a couple questions. I have a syrian at home currently, but I know these little fella's require a slight dietary change as diabetes can be a concern. I feed Oxbow Healthy Handfuls (with a seed mix for the Syrian) but is there anything I can add to that for the dwarf's or would it be best to just feed the oxbow solo? like what types of seeds would be best (if any). I have 3 Campbell's Dwarf hamsters. 2 girls and one boy. I was cleaning their cages last night, so I put them in their seperate Sterilite bins they go in when I am cleaning. They were next to each other on the table. They are normal storage bins, so sides are really high. Apparently, while I was cleaning the cages, one of the girls got over to the male's bin. Only think I can think of is she shimmied up the water bottle? I don't even see how it's possible, but all I can think of. I know they mated, because I witnessed it when i was getting her out of his bin. I love my hams and will take care of all the babies, if there are any, myself. I just need a little help and advice. I am 99pct sure they are not related. I got them from the same chain, but each store only sells one sex. Also, the male is about a year older than the girls. I know to make sure to have the cage cleaned before the birth. And not to touch the babies for at least 2 weeks after she gives birth. I know there is a possibility of cannibalization for a variety of reasons. I am hoping, of course, it doesn't happen. I do need to know what to feed her for the extra protein she will need and HOW MUCH?! I am not sure at all on what amounts to give to her. I am also wondering if its still okay to handle her? I usually handle her quite often throughout the day. Can she, for now, stay with her cage mate (another female) or shoudl she be separated right away? Is there anything else special I need to do for her while she is pregnant? Any other advice I haven't asked about it totally welcomed! thank you all in advance! There are a few questions, and I just want to see who can answer them all first. (this quiz features more than one hamster breed) WARNING!!!! This is an extremely hard quiz. Some questions are harder than others. 1) What is the smallest hamster breed in the world? 2) The primary items of a balanced diet are: 1. Proteins 2. _________ and __________ 3. Vitamins 4. Minerals 5. ___________ (fill in the blanks) 3) At least how many days should you leave your hamster's babies alone? (without touching) 4) Which types of wood bedding should you never use? 5) Which hamster breed has 44 chromosones? I will be shocked if anyone gets this on the first try. I had to research a lot to get this information. If anyone gets this, that means they are advanced in hamster knowledge. Last night I felt like he had choked on something. I picked him up and he was literally dying in my hand to the point where you could tell he had stopped breathing and didn't move. I even had time to call my boyfriend to tell him what was going on. And then all of a sudden he gave a giant kick. So I started rubbing him on his side and belly and he started breathing again. It is 7 hours later. He is still alive but clearly weaker than he was before. He walks around a little but mostly stays in his napping area. I haven't noticed if he is eating or running in his wheel, but he does very weakly climb up and down his hamster cage. Has anyone had any experience with this before? I cannot imagine what kind of stress my hamster went through and I am afraid he will get wet tail. He is getting very old. I purchased him in May of 2008. I am afraid to take him to the vet. The only vet that I could find around here clearly looked like she had no experience with hamsters. After our visit there, the stress on my other hamster was so much that he died a week later of wet tail. (Robohamster.webs.com) I thought some of you may have Robos, and this site is mainly on Syrians, so you can read it, and for more, check out my site, if you wish. Roborovksi hamsters (Phodupus Roborovskii) Robos are a bit harder to care for than Syrian hamsters. ( also known as the golden hamster or the fancy hamster) They are much faster than Syrians which can be bad if they get out. Once out, sometimes they can be impossible to catch! They don't bite as much as other breeds, and they live longer, which is nice. They live about 2-3 1/2 years if cared for properly. They don't live 18 months, or up to four years as some sources say. If you are very lucky and the cage conditions are perfect, it is slightly possible they can live up to four years or more, but very rare and unlikely. They are harder to pick up than Syrians. They are the smallest hamster breed in the world, as I have mentioned before, and grow to be 4 or 5 cm. They love to hide, so be sure to have lots of bedding for your Roborovski hamster. Roborovskis are light brown with white over their eyes, on their bellies and their necks. They also come in the white-faced type. White covers their whole face and belly. There is also the platinum type, which is when the colorings and markings are faded. Taming a hamster can be a very hard and time-demanding task. You want to be able to hold your hamster, and pet him without him running off or biting. : Let your hamster get used to his surroundings; don't try to tame your hamster until 1-2 days after bringing him home. Remember, no matter how mad you get, never hurt your hamster in the taming process. Some hamsters may never tame, and it just depends on how skittish your hamster is. How to Tame a Hamster in Five Easy Steps: Step 1: Let your hamster sniff your fingers and hands. If he bites, blow gently into his face. Step 2: Lay your hand on the bottom of the cage and let your hamster sniff and crawl on your hand. If he bites, blow. Step 3: Try putting your hamster's favorite food on your hand; he may try to crawl on your hand and get it. Step 4: Put your hamster's food bowl near your hamster. He will crawl in and try to get the food inside. Very gently and slowly put your finger on your hamster's back and stroke. Do this until your hamster doens't mind this, Step 5: Put your hands on both sides of your hamster. Gently scoop and lift. Try this several times until your hamster sits on your hand. Top Places to Buy a Hamster This is the top place to buy a healthy hamster. There is also info to picking out a healthy hamster. A pet store is a good place to buy hamster, but you can also go to a professional breeder. They are usually more of an expert than the pet stores. You never know where a hamster at a pet store comes from, but a breeder, you do. First, look into the breeder. If possible, talk to other customers of this breeder. Ask them if they are pleased and if their hamster is healthy. After this, call the breeder and talk to him or her. Plan a time to pick up the hamster. Ask to see the parents of the hamster, and ask questions. If they look healthy, (watch for runny nose, sneezy, coughing, runny eyes, bare patches in the fur, wet bottom, runny poop and a stinch to the ears) then probably it is OK to buy the babies. But again, watch the babies for a minute, and watch for the signs featured above. Ask if you can take back the baby hamster if they are sick or die within a certain time period. Hamster are best bought when they are 5 wks to 2 months. Robo hamsters only live 3-3 1/2 years. They live longer than any other breed. Fun With Your Hamster There are a lot of ways to have fun with your hamster. Here are just a few ideas: "The Stair Game" (play with a completely tame hamster!) What you need to play this game: one reliable person, stairs Put your hamster on the top of the stairs, and let him crawl down. You stand on one end of the stairs, and have a friend stand at the other. Repeat this for good exercise. Maze (play in the bath tub, or a plastic utility tub) What you need to play this game: blocks, your hamster's favorite treat Build a maze with blocks for your hamster to crawl in. Make sure not to stack blocks, or they could fall and injure your hamster. Put a treat at the end of the maze as a reward for your hamster. Put your hamster in the maze, and watch it crawl around. They dolt me it looked like she might of scrached it and caused a Ulser on the ee, so they gave me some eye drops to give her 2 times daily, i have to take her back on Thursday for a checkup, will let you know how she is then. Hopefully she wont lose the sight of this eye, if she does she sould still see with her other eye and still have a 2 year or so life span.. I've had to separate Lucy an Ethel for good, Lucy kept beating her up. :/ But I have gotten a job at a (wait for it) local pet store, which I found through my grooming job. While I was helping out on my first day, I saw this "little" Siberian who was fffaaaattttt. When I picked him up, I noticed he had a squinty eye. No discharge, but kept it closed. Over the past couple days, he's gotten a little better, but still squinty. ... So I brought him home. I've named him Jack, since he only (currently) has one eye. ;) I'm keeping a close eye (...) on him, and he's pretty mellow so far. I think she must of been happy this morning for some reason, i noticed her Daughter was kinda standing still at 1 cornor of her cage, i was able to get hold of her first time, as she can still give a nipp, but when i got her i noticed she was on heat. so after a few mins hold i put her back in her cage.. I found out that the squeeking could be a mating call, otr a happy squueking sound, but sandy was'nt on heat, only Gracey was, but im 100pct sure it was sandy doing all the squeeking, now she stopped and gone to bed... well least 1 was happy today i think.. They did, thankfully. They only carried female hamsters. That afternoon, we went there. I saw a large cage with two people looking in at it. It was full of female Robos! I asked the sales clerk to help me, and she did. It took a while, but I finally picked two of them. The smallest of them all, because I thought they would stick together. (one of the hammies escaped, but thankfully it was caught. it wasn't Sunny or Skittles) I took them home, and they love each other. They are always together. I was a bit worried at first, because they kept getting on their hind legs, and getting at each other. (no squeaking) They were just getting to know each other. And then I was worried because Skittles seemed to be mounting Sunny, but when I sexed them, they were the same sex. (one hole, no yellow stain, or 'thing sticking out' heh heh) Now they are so loving, and insist on running on the same wheel. hamster17 replied to johnchad1 rip blaze http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859180&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859180&GetAllPosts=1 Wed, 20 Oct 2010, 18:13:36 johnchad1 - today my little girl blaze died she was a syrian hamster she was charlies sister poor wee soul had a tumor on her spine there was nothing we could do for her she had a happy life and with us now she is back with charlie and rusty sleep tight little one miss you girl rip xxx hamster17 replied to johnchad1 rip charlie http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859173&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859173&GetAllPosts=1 Mon, 18 Oct 2010, 13:01:20 johnchad1 - yesterday my wee man charlie died he was a syrian poor wee guy had a op to remove a tumor he had a happy life with us we rescued charlie from being snake food he died curled up in my partners hands miss u love sleep tight litle one xx MrSteve replied to MrSteve Cream Crackers Question. http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859201&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859201&GetAllPosts=1 Fri, 22 Oct 2010, 14:33:07 MrSteve - Can hamster eat Jacob's Cream Crackers..?? Having a hammy die is so much worse than it seems... You see all those posts about hamsters dying, and only those who have had a hamster die know what it is... You can't even understand! It's so horrible... This morning, Pip was very still... He was moving around, but very slowly. I had switched to Kaytee food very recently, and I discovered that it could cause sickness, so I switched this morning. I was using Nutriphase Gold, and I switched back to that a few hours before his death. Pip was acting very slow, so I put him in his ball thinking he was just a little tired. He ran a little bit, but not very much. I put him back in his cage. Mrsfish and Miss.fishy gave me a bunch of good advice, but it was too late to do anything... We though it was constipation or diabetes, but I think it was the Kaytee food mix... An hour or two ago, Pip wasn't moving at all, but he was still breathing. I pet him, trying to get him to move. I came back to check on him, and his eyes were open, and I knew that wasn't a good sign... I looked closer and he wasn't breathing. My dad picked him up and put bedding in his favorite cup, then put him in it, putting more bedding on top. We went and dug a small hole underneath the little Oak tree. We put Pip in the hole. I am going to put a gravestone there tomorrow.... RIP Pip, I will always love you!!! This goes on for hours in the middle of the night, when she is most active, and makes a horrendous noise that keeps me up at night. At this point its the hamster or my sleep. I went out and bought a wooden house. When I got home, I checked the company's website to see what wood it was. Turns out that it is pine. Now I know pine shavings are horrid for a hamsters respiratory system, but is having a pine house so bad? This wood has been treated and processed. Thanks in advance. Well i now may have to find new homes for all my loving Hamsters, reson why, here it is. Me and my wife have never realy got on with each other over the last 5-6 year, but the last 3 years have grown worse, We dont sleep with each other and i sleep in my own room which i call a junk room coz i admit i do have loads of stuff in here, I dont have a bed, but a sofa i sleep on. All my hamsters are in my room and i sleep with them every nite even when they Very noisey, i have to wear Ear Plugs to shut out there noise, bar chewing, ect. Ive stod out side the room to see how bad the noise is, which is only bad when they play in there wheels,as some do squeek, so i lock them off now around 11pm, the bar chewing sometimes can be heard but not that much, The wife has her door closed and i did try to see if i could hear the noise from my hamsters at night, which is mimimal, and her room is right next to mine. Well last night my landlord came around to collect his Rent money which was oweing him from the wife, i was standing out side my room listening to what he was saying to my wife, and i herd my wife tell the landlord i had loads of Hamsters and she was fed upwith the noise and mess, smell, Well my landlord didnt know i had any hamsrters at this time untill she told him, but did tell him i was thinking of getting some a few weeks back just to see what he would say, which was'nt much. my wife told him that they stunk and made a very bad mess which they dont coz i clean the hamster cages out every week, i use mild washing up liquid and deturgent, ok sometime bits of bedding cling to me and may full on the floor when i got out to clean them, but i do my best in cleaning it up.. When my landlord was ready to go, i left with him and came up with the truth that i had owned hamsters for anout 6 months now, and he had no worries about them causing any damage to his property, but he stated the rules that in the contract there should be no pets allowed in the house, So i said well The wife had a guniepig a few years back it was kepted out side the house but she had one, and she now has FISH, is'nt fish classed as a pet, and he has'nt said nothink about her keeping fish. I told him the reason why i had hamsters, which is, i get bored being on my own, not talking to anyone, the wife dont talk to me, my kids only speak to me when they want somethink, and thats all..So thats the reason i got the hamsters, somethink to care about, talk to (even if they dont understand me) and to give a hug time to time. the landlord not to happy i dont think, but as i have done him favours in the past and am doing him a favour now selling his old surplus stock of Rented DVDs as he use to run a video & internet cafe which he has now closed down plus he want me to look at his laptop next week as it is running slow, i dont think he should tell me to get rid of them, if he does i will surely be upset doing so, and will have no option in doing so, which will break my heart seeing my little hamster friends and family go and leave me. So if i am to find new home for them i will let you all know, i did tell hm how many i have, and that 2 just had babies and i cant rehome them till they 5-6 weeek old, but the petshop said they would have them from me, but then i have my other 6 to think of. Reggie, Sandy, Chucky, Scruffy, Casper, Jess. If i have to see these go, then i just wont know what to do with myself and my boredom. I do try talking to my wife, but that fails on a daily run, i try talking to my 3 teenage kids and they to busy on the phone to there friends or playing games or on the internet.. so where do i stand. I will talk to my landlord again and hopefully he will let me keep them, but if he says i have to get rid of them i let you all know. Another sad day for me, which has caused me to get a massive migrain... Sorry message is long. snoopyrox replied to akromasmom Question about hammies in heat http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858921&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858921&GetAllPosts=1 Sun, 29 Aug 2010, 16:53:38 akromasmom - Do hamsters bleed when they are in heat like other mammals do? I must either invest in better cages or try and find a better way to secure these doors. Clips as many of you said are the ansewer, but i tried them and they dont realy do much better, they seem to cause more damage to the hamster mouth if they chew on them. Maybe small padlocks might be an answer leaving the keys in the locks but if they some how manage to get the keys out and chew swollow them it could kill them.. Anyone go any other idears how to secure these door. replied to MrSteve BaBIES REHOMED. http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859022&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859022&GetAllPosts=1 Wed, 15 Sep 2010, 01:48:35 MrSteve - OK just to let you know i rang the petshop up on monday and asked if he was going to take my babie hamsters, he tld me he just had 12 delivered, i thought he was goingto let me down ,i told him Oh coz ya said you would have them, so he said how many did i have to get rid of, i think he was relifed when i said 3, it would of been 4,but 1 has found a home.(My home..lol) yep i decided to keep another. He oked it with 3 and yesterday & was taken to the shop, he had to sort out some cages, and instead of paying me £3:50 each i took some Stick treats and Bedding and chocklate buttons,in exchange, saving me spending more money. good thing was he kepted them in the shop and not out the back, lets hope they will go soon to new home, with people who will care for them, and not have them as food for there Snakes/Lizards,Rats, ect, ect. I was honest with the guy that 1 girl was still a screamer, and the boy was kinda shy,but the shop still took them. I now have 4 more to rehome 2 boys, 2 girls from Jess's litter, ones went to shop was from Sandy's litter. I hope he will take these next week, if not i have to try another pet shop, lucky i have 3 in my area, I have 8 cages, so i may keep one of Jess's babies to as they are realy tame now, Sandys babies was very bad, lol, apart from the one ive kepted has now suddenly clarmed down within the last 2 days, sand i can pick her up without any problems at all, no biteing and no screaming like her 2 sister and brothers did. anyways will keep you updated about Jess's babies next week.. Oh sorry i forgot to take pictures of them seperatly befor rehoming them at the petshop, but i did take group picture befor i sexed them into seperate cages, but they came out blury, and not worth posting. replied to Allycat Test post http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859016&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=859016&GetAllPosts=1 Mon, 13 Sep 2010, 18:57:55 Allycat - Yes...I can ilovemehamie replied to ilovemehamie New hamster screaming?! http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858970&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858970&GetAllPosts=1 Mon, 06 Sep 2010, 17:56:48 ilovemehamie - Recently bought a hamster and tried to feed her. Anyway i hunter the room and finaly found her DEAD, she was caught between some old PC cages and must of got caught and struggled and killed herself via stress, i checked her over and found no wombs on her so she died at her own fault, this was the old cage scruffy once escape from to. She will be buried next to scruffy later today as it is to late to burie her now as it is 2am, i will try and make sure all cages are again secure with some extra security feature, a paper clip or somethink or a cloths wooden peg... I showed Sandy her poor daughter at the bars and sandy tried to bite the babies nose thinking she might want to eat it, but i took it away quickly and put it in a old Printer box with Bedding and some food ready for her journey to Rainbow Bridge. RIP little one. Sandy 4 out of 7 babies left *2 died in the first 2 weeks, this one was 4 1/2 weeks old. Jess, 4 babies left 6 born, 2 died in first 2 weeks. They now have 4 each left. ilovemehamie replied to ilovemehamie I'm back!! http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858963&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858963&GetAllPosts=1 Mon, 06 Sep 2010, 09:20:00 ilovemehamie - Haven't been on here in such a long time. The baby boy was put into a new cage today and he seems fine with it.think he's been asleep most of the afternoon now, the girls i left with there mom sandy for a few hours more untill sandy started getting to bossy in the tube system and started to bite the others, so i took all 4 girls out which all in turned PEED on me when doing so. and put them in Scruffy's old cage, and as they liked sandy's tube system when they was in there age i put what spare tubes i had built as one and leaned it upword and they are happy plaing on that and the 2 wheels. He was less than a year old and was my special little buddy. When we went to check on him Sunday night, he was struggling to breathe and died about 20 minutes later in my hand as my fiancee and I tried to give him water with a dropper. His belly was distended and hard and when we emptied his habitat there was not as much poop as we had expected. Could this have been a severe case of constipation? How do I prevent this in our new friend FuzzHead? We fed Bobby a Hamster mix food from the pet store, water was readily available, and we took him out for exercise in his ball for at least 25-30 min at a time per day. His favorite treats included banana chips and sunflower seeds. Thanks in advance! I was wearing Slippers, and my feet are big and i do kinda stomp time to time when im half sleeping. I picked her up and she flopped back in my hands, i called her name and started to stroke her, and she started to come around, i spoke to her for a little while ,while i was holding her. ive put her on the floor, and she is like dragging her body along the floor, a few inches, then stops. i picked her back up and placed her in her handle cage, and kepted an eye on her the rest of the night. She is sleeping and is moving around a little, but she dont seem to be standing on her legs or hands, nor is she eating much, i think this is down to shock more than anythink. Ive given her some porridge via a spoon, and though she is eating a little time to time, she seems to be biteing the spoon. Ive also given her some water, then let her back in her nest in her normal cage. Ive tried to ring the VETS, but they seem to be busy/phone always busy tone. im not sure if she has broken any arms/legs or anythink,or crushed anythink they could be brused, her mouth looks out of place a little, and she is dribbleing a little, but does somethime eat what i give her and she is yawning time to time. im not to sure if she will survive, only time will tell, i try and give the vets a call again in the morning, hopefully i get though and get Fluffy seen to ASAP, thats if she survives the night, she survived last nite. Oh i still had some medication pain relife stuff from when Scruffy hert his arm, so im giving fluffy some of that to help with the pain same amount of doseage i ude to give scruffy.. Some of these Cage doors are so unsecure, im thinking of trying to find the name of the manufacture and put a letter of complaint in, as if there doors was more secure i doubt Fluffy would of got out. It's really been a while, sorry for the absence! This afternoon in Petsmart, I was giving a look-around for a new hamster cage for my syrian hamster (Toby). An attachment cage of his needs replaced. I saw the traditional HT/CT cages and then I saw an eco-friendly cage with a rust-resistant wire, wooden shelving, and it came with a couple accessories. It had a wooden based lined with plastic. It was cheaper then all the plastic commercial cages but LARGER dimensions of 27"L by 17"W by ?H and the largest commercial cage I've found otherwise the CT deluxe is 23"L x 15"W x 12.75"H I cannot find this cage on the Petsmart or other websites. I wish I could remember the brand, or more about it. If I'm back up that way I will get photo's or something. Has anyone seen this cage around? Does anyone have this cage? What are your opinions on it? I was looking on more information on security (I have an escape artist) and the type of wood used for shelving etc. Bacara replied to chano008 hw many days can i hdle the bby ham http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858802&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858802&GetAllPosts=1 Sun, 15 Aug 2010, 09:08:51 chano008 - my baby hamster is 5 day old how many days can i handle him??his eyes is still close hehe..and 1 more thing what is the best food for the mommy to produce more milk???plss elp me Bacara replied to chano008 seperating ng baby how mny weeks?? http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858833&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858833&GetAllPosts=1 Thu, 19 Aug 2010, 23:43:31 chano008 - my baby hams is 13 days old,,is that ok if i seperate him in 1 mount?? Ok i told you all that Jess had 6 babies, but this was a mistake it was sandy whom had 6 babies last week, last tuesday.. Well today this time it was Jess whom had 7 babies, i had to pick her up quickly to count them, lol, all seem ok, i think there might of been more as im sure i saw her eat 1, it could of been the after-birth i dont know, but it didnt look like it to me, could of been a damaged baby, but taking a good look into the nest with a BBQ stick so my scent would'nt touch them, i see there is 7 babies, just out beating sandy's 6 babies. Think thats all she going to have, she started around 9pm, now it's 10pm, 1 hour later still 7 babies. All babies will be gong to the petshop when old enought, unless some of you want to travel to SW london (UK) to collect 1 or 2 when they are old enough. Will try and get some pictures later, but my camera sucks in taking good pictures. Sandy's babies are now 1 week old and now started to grow fur, and all 6 doing well. johnchad1 replied to gazpache Soft Feces http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858718&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858718&GetAllPosts=1 Wed, 28 Jul 2010, 10:51:02 gazpache - I just got another hamster yesterday and noticed the lil guy had a small release of some soft looking fecal matter. Nearly every day the last 2 weeks she been either going for my hand, or showing a bad temper aditude towards me, even when i give her treats through the bars she shatches them rapidly from me bearing teeth. Ive tried everythink but now she screams at me aswell, i had her housed under the table where it nice and dark, but i thought i try moving her and swopping places with one of the males, but she just seems to be getting worse. i asked the pet shop if he wanted her, but he said not coz she told old, (3 months) i dear give her to any of my friends, ones with hamsters,as im sure she would bite the children. i just dont know what to do now, it either finding someone who would be willing to take her from me and try and give more time and care, or hand to to a pets home which i dont realy want to do.. I just dont want to do this to her if ican , she is a nice brown longhair and cute looking but i just cant cope with the way she is acting, so unless i can find away to stop her doing this, biteing and showing treating behavior i may haveto find a way of rehomeing her. Why is she like this.? none of the other hamsters are like this, her Twin brother Scruggy has calmed down a lot more than befor, and i can stroke him and pick him up as lot more without him biteing.. So unless someone can help out with some advice i may have to rehome her withink the next 2-3 weeks. I mean, I love animals all the time, but I had five hamsters and two ferrets living in a TINY bedroom. Now I live in this house's master bedroom and I'm getting animal crazy again. I bought my mom fish for her birthday (her first pets), I just spent almost $300 on iguana stuff for my boyfriend (also his first pet, but he's making sure the tank is regulated before he gets the iguana), and now I pulled out a few old hamster cages. I'm giving away the Habitrail Space Station on Craigslist, but I took one look at my 20gal tank and then I thought back to this cute chocolate brown girl with a cinnamon color around her eyes that I saw at Petco last week and I'm going back for her, haha. I really hope she's still there because I could barely tear myself away from her tank. So, I just got a ferret and now I'm going back for a hamster. My parents will be very pleased. Oh! But being as obbsesed with hamsters as I am I want more. (LOL) I have 7 hamster cages and two hamsters, (don't ask...) so I have cages in case they fight. I really want to breed them. But I have lots of issues. I will now put them in a list 1. I only have a male 2. My parents aren't letting me get more hamsters 3.If they did they still might not let me breed them 4. the hammies may not get along Does anyone have an idea on how I can try to get my parents to agree? Any help would be much apreciated. Thanks... There should be no problem this time with homeing the youngsters when they old enough, as the pet store nearest to me seems to be out of stock ofthem most times now, i asked if he still intrested in any, and he said yes,he would take them off my hands,so i hope that all goes wells. i mated Sandy wqith reggie again the other nite but he was'nt realy up to it i dont think, maybe he lost intrest, so i then used one of her son's Chucky, he was keen to go for it, so about 20-25 mins later i seperated them, must of done the job by then, tho sandy might of kepted going, but i thought that was enough time..i soon see if she is pregnat on Friday being the 4th day after she had mated, will let you know the out come,if i cant tell by then then i should know in 2 weeks time. I Doubt i will keep any myself, but 2 people said they wanted 1, wilmar took 2 of my males last time, but she passed them on to other people, she said now she rather have a 2nd female,so if sandy has any girls i know then i have a home for at least 1,and the others again as stated will go to the petstore, just hope i wont full for any myself,as i cant keep any this time around... the last set of babies i had i kepted 5 and still have the 5 here, i could rehome one of the girls now(Jess) as she has become realy Tame, but i got kinda lose to her now and would hate to part her from me and the rest of the family,as with Fluffy she is still a little tempermental and snatches her food when you give her treats, just like Scruffy was (Her Brother) and both being long hair hammies... Still Scruffy has settled down now with me, im sure he trusts me now as i can pick him up a lot more, hand feed him to which i could'nt do a while ago... I just wounder if long hair hamsters have a differant manner than short hair hamsters have.??? So anyways as i said the next bach of babies will have somewhere to go wihout any problems, there is 3 pet stores near me that will take some or all (I HOPE)..lol update on any new babies soon. P.S Oh i was going to try mate one of the younger girls, but i cant seem to know when they are on heat (LOL) so thats why i chose Sandy again as i know when she was on heat by the smell again... I think this will be the last time in mateing sandy now 2 times is enought i think, while many people would bread 1 hamster several times, i think 2 times with Sand is enough for her. chano008 replied to chano008 2 months old my hamster mating?? http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858685&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858685&GetAllPosts=1 Sat, 24 Jul 2010, 01:34:56 chano008 - My hamster Laura is a 2 months old when i see him last night OMG shes mating to my male they having Sex,,i need to know its that ok to hamster to be pregnant even shes to months old??? I have one named Pip. I thought maybe, since they aren't a well-known breed, and most people on this board are Syrian owners, this could help. Roborovskis (or Robos) are brown with white over their eyes, and white noses, and bellies. The rest of them are light brown. Some of them have completely white faces, and are rare. They are 3 inches long, and ar every fast. If they get out of their cage, they can be impossible to catch. They can run the lenght of four human marathons in one night, so they need a wheel much worse than a Syrian (Golden hamster, fancy hamster) does. They eat, drink, and poop less than Syrians, and they can live in pairs, but are OK on their own. They bite less than Syrians, but are exceedingly hard to train. They are skittish and bolt at sudden movements. They need a large cage with very thin bars or they can get out. They need a big cage, because they love to run, and a small cage just won't do. They are relatively new to the hamster world, and have only been around about 20-45 years. They originally are from China, and lived in the sandy areas, so hamster dust (or chinchilla dust) in a bath house or food bowl is a good idea. For more information, or to hit the forums, go to my site at www.robohamster.webs.com. Perhaps I helped someone who needed to know these things? LOL! :) lizzi replied to Bacara Adopting a syrian! I thought that the hamster might be diabetic but I was unsure as no site lists the hair-loss as being sticky looking (I haven't touched it's stomach myself). It's food does contain cane molasses and it has been enjoying some raisins and mixed nuts with the occasional insect (gut-loaded crickets or a small mealworm (I keep reptiles and sometimes I will give the hamster the uneaten insects)), under normal circumstances we would take the hamster to the vet but as it is we have very little money (mom is on work leave, I can't work and my brother chooses not to work, go figure) and the cost of the vet vs. 'maybe he will get better with time' both play a vital part in the fact that we can't afford the vet right now, maybe later but not right now... I really don't need a lecture on buying a 'cheap' animal and being too poor to pay the vet, I need some real help from people with similiar animals or have seen similiar cases before, please help my mothers hamster. P.S. I check all my insects and I properly maintain both the insects diets and habitats, the insects are also home raised for quality control, they are not causing this issues, unless he is allergic to them, in either case I have stopped feeding the hamster insects until this is sorted out. P.S.S. the hamster may or may not have been given a bath, it doesn't appear to have a cold nor does it act like it has a cold, it also has greasy fur on it's back and face. No news is good news... mostly. First, my adopted Winter Whites (Lucy and Ethel) are doing fine, no babies, thankfully. Lucy is just a fatty and likes to stuff her cheeks as full of food as she can, but there's always plenty left for Ethel. I'm writing because Pascha, my Campbell's, seems to have lost her little hammy mind. Once spring rolled around, and the windows were opened on the nice days, she started chewing. And chewing. And chewing on the bars of her cage. She won't stop. She has stuff to chew on, but the bars are what she picks usually. She has different chewing modes too. There's this frantic, incredibly loud chew, and a smaller "Hey, give me attention," chew, and others in between. As soon as I look at her most times, she'll stop, only to start again when I look away. Seriously. She sits and looks at me, and waits until I'm not looking. I will reach in the cage and physically move her away when she's being really loud. She's nipped me a couple times when I do this, and nipped my fiance once. It's not a "I smell food!" bite. Tonight she bit me hard, and actually hung on to my finger when I, obviously, pulled away. Any ideas? I'm really at a loss. I don't want her to wind up like one of my rats, where we couldn't even open the door without him lunging at us. Is it the weather? I look her over all the time, and don't see any signs of injury. So, I have a Siberian hamster that is two years old, so I know she may not have much longer to live. Well, the other day I looked at her and she was shaking and couldn't walk too well. =/ I figured she was going to die and later that night she was laying perfectly stiff on her side. I even poked her and she didn't move. I was sad, but I didn't have time to do anything about it at the moment. Then, I came back later and she had moved and was in a different spot. The next day, she was perfectly fine and ran in her ball and climbed up her latter! She looks a little more like an old lady now, but alive. Anyone know what might have happened? I found him down the back of the boxes where he's cage is located, i was just about lucky to see him, due to him having white on his coat, if he had'nt had a part white coat i doubt i would of seen him. I replaced him in his cage and watch some TV when i suddenlt heard a click, i looked over to reggies cage and found that he had somehow pushed the door open on his cage, and was lucky to see him befor he got out again a 2nd time today. I went over and closed the door and watched how he did it, he was chewing his cagedoor and the pressure he was putting on the door was so great he was pushing the door open. i checked the connector and found it is wearing down on the door, even though the cage is new, ive managed to make a fix by pushing the connector up and under which now locks, Even tho reggie is still is chewing the cage on the door section he now cant get out, but it make it harder for me to get him out now..lol. So a quick word of advice check your door connectors as they will wear down and will allow your hamsters to push the door down and escape. I think i will have t try and look for some kind of door clips to use,if there is anythink like this avalible.? hamster17 replied to Mandy Need creative hamster names... http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858352&GetAllPosts=1 http://hamsterific.com/BBS/ViewPost.cfm?Post=858352&GetAllPosts=1 Wed, 30 Jun 2010, 14:30:42 Mandy - For a) a female hamster and b) a male hamster.
