ilovemehamie - Recently bought a hamster and tried to feed her. She wouldn't take it and when I tried to gently pet her she started screaming. I've never had a hamster do this. Don't think she's ever been held before, maybe she's nervous? How can I help her calm down?

MrSteve - Hi all, yep another sad day, another baby lost, she escaped from her cage, how i have no idear, unless it was not shut properly when i put in new feed, but she was sharing the cage with her 3 other sisters,so how they didnt escape to i got no idear. Anyway i hunter the room and finaly found her DEAD, she was caught between some old PC cages and must of got caught and struggled and killed herself via stress, i checked her over and found no wombs on her so she died at her own fault, this was the old cage scruffy once escape from to. She will be buried next to scruffy later today as it is to late to burie her now as it is 2am, i will try and make sure all cages are again secure with some extra security feature, a paper clip or somethink or a cloths wooden peg... I showed Sandy her poor daughter at the bars and sandy tried to bite the babies nose thinking she might want to eat it, but i took it away quickly and put it in a old Printer box with Bedding and some food ready for her journey to Rainbow Bridge. RIP little one. Sandy 4 out of 7 babies left *2 died in the first 2 weeks, this one was 4 1/2 weeks old. Jess, 4 babies left 6 born, 2 died in first 2 weeks. They now have 4 each left.

ilovemehamie - Haven't been on here in such a long time. My previous hamster Tink or Tinkerbell has passed after 3 long happy years. Its been a few months and I just got a new hamster. Her name is bella and she is a short haired Syrian and is solid orange. Will try to post pics soon!

MrSteve - Today i moved Sandy's babaies into there own sexed cages, i dont think she realy cares much, she still her normal self, putting her food in the tube system which i hate her keep doing as it is hard to take apart and put back together again.. i keep telling her not to do this but she still does..lol tonite ive blocked of the tube system to teach her a lesson not to put food in the tube system and she just pays on her wheel. The baby boy was put into a new cage today and he seems fine with it.think he's been asleep most of the afternoon now, the girls i left with there mom sandy for a few hours more untill sandy started getting to bossy in the tube system and started to bite the others, so i took all 4 girls out which all in turned PEED on me when doing so. and put them in Scruffy's old cage, and as they liked sandy's tube system when they was in there age i put what spare tubes i had built as one and leaned it upword and they are happy plaing on that and the 2 wheels. Now sandy is on her own again, she playingherwheel more again while i blocked her tubes off.

lizzi - i have two robo- hamsters and one is quite big and loves food. the other one i have noticed has quite a curvy shape. she has big ribs and cheeks yet seems rather thin on her stomach and almost flat on her bottom. she also seems to have quite stickyout back legs although she is fine to run. she wont take food from me and doesnt seem to be eating it now i think about it. what do i do? is she just smaller than her sister?

mmartincscs - Hi everyone, Our beloved Prince Bobby (Golden Angora Teddybear) died this past weekend. He was less than a year old and was my special little buddy. When we went to check on him Sunday night, he was struggling to breathe and died about 20 minutes later in my hand as my fiancee and I tried to give him water with a dropper. His belly was distended and hard and when we emptied his habitat there was not as much poop as we had expected. Could this have been a severe case of constipation? How do I prevent this in our new friend FuzzHead? We fed Bobby a Hamster mix food from the pet store, water was readily available, and we took him out for exercise in his ball for at least 25-30 min at a time per day. His favorite treats included banana chips and sunflower seeds. Thanks in advance!

Samiam1 - I have always loved cooking. And I love spoiling my little Natalia! She's so happy looking when I put a banana in her cage! I think I'd much rather make some food out of some fruit, veggies, perhaps a little mutton(Probably not), sunflower seeds, and maybe pumpkin seeds! Can anyone give me suggestions on what to give her?

Samiam1 - It's a miracle! We're not allowed to have oets of any sort, says the man who we rent the house from, well his daughter is going off to college, and she owns a cat and a dwarf hamster, and she wants to give my the hamster and all the equipment! She said she could talk to her dad and maybe convince him! Yay! :D It's a year old, and is very friendly. I can't wait to see if I can!

MrSteve - Hi. Well i now may have to find new homes for all my loving Hamsters, reson why, here it is. Me and my wife have never realy got on with each other over the last 5-6 year, but the last 3 years have grown worse, We dont sleep with each other and i sleep in my own room which i call a junk room coz i admit i do have loads of stuff in here, I dont have a bed, but a sofa i sleep on. All my hamsters are in my room and i sleep with them every nite even when they Very noisey, i have to wear Ear Plugs to shut out there noise,bar chewing, ect. Ive stod out side the room to see how bad the noise is, which is only bad when they play in there wheels,as some do squeek, so i lock them off now around 11pm, the bar chewing sometimes can be heard but not that much, The wife has her door closed and i did try to see if i could hear the noise from my hamsters at night,which is mimimal, and her room is right next to mine. Well last night my landlord came around to collect his Rent money which was oweing him from the wife, i was standing out side my room listening to what he was saying to my wife, and i herd my wife tell the landlord i had loads of Hamsters and she was fed upwith the noise and mess,smell, Well my landlord didnt know i had any hamsrters at this time untill she told him, but did tell him i was thinking of getting some a few weeks back just to see what he would say,which was'nt much. my wife told him that they stunk and made a very bad mess which they dont coz i clean the hamster cages out every week, i use mild washing up liquid and deturgent, ok sometime bits of bedding cling to me and may full on the floor when i got out to clean them, but i do my best in cleaning it up.. When my landlord was ready to go, i left with him and came up with the truth that i had owned hamsters for anout 6 months now, and he had no worries about them causing any damage to his property, but he stated the rules that in the contract there should be no pets allowed in the house, So i said well The wife had a guniepig a few years back it was kepted out side the house but she had one, and she now has FISH, is'nt fish classed as a pet, and he has'nt said nothink about her keeping fish. I told him the reason why i had hamsters, which is, i get bored being on my own, not talking to anyone,the wife dont talk to me, my kids only speak to me when they want somethink,and thats all..So thats the reason i got the hamsters, somethink to care about, talk to (even if they dont understand me) and to give a hug time to time. the landlord not to happy i dont think, but as i have done him favours in the past and am doing him a favour now selling his old surplus stock of Rented DVDs as he use to run a video & internet cafe which he has now closed down plus he want me to look at his laptop next week as it is running slow, i dont think he should tell me to get rid of them, if he does i will surely be upset doing so, and will have no option in doing so, which will break my heart seeing my little hamster friends and family go and leave me. So if i am to find new home for them i will let you all know, i did tell hm how many i have,and that 2 just had babies and i cant rehome them till they 5-6 weeek old, but the petshop said they would have them from me, but then i have my other 6 to think of. Reggie, Sandy, Chucky, Scruffy, Casper, Jess. If i have to see these go, then i just wont know what to do with myself and my boredom. I do try talking to my wife, but that fails on a daily run, i try talking to my 3 teenage kids and they to busy on the phone to there friends or playing games or on the internet.. so where do i stand. I will talk to my landlord again and hopefully he will let me keep them, but if he says i have to get rid of them i let you all know. Another sad day for me, which has caused me to get a massive migrain... Sorry message is long.

MrSteve - Fluffy somehow got out her cage dueing the night, and i didnt know, i woke up to goto the bathroom,and when cumming back, trod on her,hearing a yelp/Squeel. I was wearing Slippers, and my feet are big and i do kinda stomp time to time when im half sleeping. I picked her up and she flopped back in my hands, i called her name and started to stroke her, and she started to come around, i spoke to her for a little while ,while i was holding her. ive put her on the floor,and she is like dragging her body along the floor, a few inches, then stops. i picked her back up and placed her in her handle cage, and kepted an eye on her the rest of the night. She is sleeping and is moving around a little, but she dont seem to be standing on her legs or hands, nor is she eating much, i think this is down to shock more than anythink. Ive given her some porridge via a spoon, and though she is eating a little time to time, she seems to be biteing the spoon. Ive also given her some water, then let her back in her nest in her normal cage. Ive tried to ring the VETS, but they seem to be busy/phone always busy tone. im not sure if she has broken any arms/legs or anythink,or crushed anythink they could be brused, her mouth looks out of place a little,and she is dribbleing a little, but does somethime eat what i give her and she is yawning time to time. im not to sure if she will survive, only time will tell, i try and give the vets a call again in the morning,hopefully i get though and get Fluffy seen to ASAP, thats if she survives the night, she survived last nite. Oh i still had some medication pain relife stuff from when Scruffy hert his arm, so im giving fluffy some of that to help with the pain same amount of doseage i ude to give scruffy.. Some of these Cage doors are so unsecure, im thinking of trying to find the name of the manufacture and put a letter of complaint in, as if there doors was more secure i doubt Fluffy would of got out. Will keep you update on Fluffys progress as soon as i know.

JessnToby - Hey everyone! It's really been a while, sorry for the absence! This afternoon in Petsmart, I was giving a look-around for a new hamster cage for my syrian hamster (Toby). An attachment cage of his needs replaced. I saw the traditional HT/CT cages and then I saw an eco-friendly cage with a rust-resistant wire, wooden shelving, and it came with a couple accessories. It had a wooden based lined with plastic. It was cheaper then all the plastic commercial cages but LARGER dimensions of 27"L by 17"W by ?H and the largest commercial cage I've found otherwise the CT deluxe is 23"L x 15"W x 12.75"H I cannot find this cage on the Petsmart or other websites. I wish I could remember the brand, or more about it. If I'm back up that way I will get photo's or something. Has anyone seen this cage around? Does anyone have this cage? What are your opinions on it? I was looking on more information on security (I have an escape artist) and the type of wood used for shelving etc.

MrSteve - these cages are totaly crapp.. most of the cages i have are the same type, and the latches on the doors are just totaly crapp. Lucky for me i was in the room at the time Casper was chewing his cage door bars and the darn thing popped open i grabbed him befor he could get any further.. I must either invest in better cages or try and find a better way to secure these doors. Clips as many of you said are the ansewer, but i tried them and they dont realy do much better, they seem to cause more damage to the hamster mouth if they chew on them. Maybe small padlocks might be an answer leaving the keys in the locks but if they some how manage to get the keys out and chew swollow them it could kill them.. Anyone go any other idears how to secure these door.

Hannah - I recently purchased my second hamster from a pet store. I had a wonderful experience with my first Syrian ChiChi, everyone loved her and were always amazed at how tame and friendly she was. She died last year, and I finally decided to try it again because I missed having one so much... So I picked up Einstein (a long haired teddy bear hamster with fluffy white and gray hair) a few weeks ago and was determined to make the best home for him I could. But it seems like no matter how patient I am and no matter how gentle I am that he's making no progress in becoming tame at all. I understand the kind of time it takes because I've done it once before and I haven't even dreamed of trying to hold him yet, but he still acts VERY skiddish of me even though I've been talking to him and giving him treats and giving him plenty of space to adjust to his new home. He was taking treats out of my hand but now he won't. Last week he had a spell where he was walking in circles alot and tilting his head, but since he quit and seems better I figured he was ok. He hasn't done it since, but he does have some strange behaviors. For example he hasn't run on his wheel since the very first day I brought him home, and even for a hamster he stays inside his nest alot. There were several days and nights where he didn't come out at all and it took him a long time to try to drink out of his bottle. He acts very afraid and nervous of everything and everyone, and he nips a lot. He bit me once and later I remembered I'd eaten and hadn't washed my hands so I didn't think much of it, but even when I do wash my hands and approach him very slowly he still tries to bite at me. I really have been patient and gentle with him and done everything I know to do to be considerate of him, but he doesn't seem to be doing any better. I have him in an OVO habitrail habitat suite, and its really roomy with lots of tunnels and places to explore. He has hamster litter, plenty of food, a nice wheel built in (that he won't use) and chew toys and treats regularly. Its been almost a month now and I'm concerned that maybe he's a sickly hamster, or was mistreated in some way that made him nervous of people. Does anyone know anything I could do to make him feel safer around me?

MrSteve - Jess losed another baby today, not a week old, just started growing it's fur, poor littlen was ok when i last saw it around late afternoon, but when i checked it today around 2:25am, i saw it by itself, stiff and cold , i checked it for any bites, marks, but nothink, looked like a Girl to me, to. So thats 2 Jess has lost from her litter, 1 one the first 24-hours, and one nearing it first week.. Not sure why this one died at all.. Will miss the littne i know.

kelana - Our syrian hamsters mated exactly two weeks ago and I was almost positive she got pregnant. Her nipples were prominent and she didn't go into heat at all the next two cycles. I didn't check last time though. However, it's 2 days til her due date and she doesn't look or feel bigger at all! She was a pretty big girl to begin with, but she hasn't gained any weight. Could she just be having a small litter or is a phantom pregnancy likely? I've had a pregnant hamster before and she was HUGE at this point, but she had a litter of 11 or more. Other people who have had pregnant syrians, how big did your girly get? And then how many pups did she have?

JohnnyN - I intend on getting a hamster sometime in the coming month or the next two months. I've already got a 10 gallon tank and of course lots of background information. I was reading the section of the site on feeding, but now I'm rather confused on it. What I got from it was basically: excellent grade hamster feed from reputable brand, supplement with vegetables (do they have to be dehydrated?) and then offer treats 2-3 times a week. Am I missing anything?

MrSteve - More bad news This time Sandy lost a baby, taking a look at it, i think the poor littlen must of choked to death, as when looking his mouth was filled with poop, and the poor little thing was just over a week old,and gaining hair, sand was looking like his mother. MrSteve - Some sad news, a babie of Jess was found dead today when i was checking on her littlens, i showed Jess the babie and she took it in to her mouth , then a few momements later took it out, licked it, then eat it. Will never know what made it die, all i can say looking at it, it had a black round marking in his/her belly. so it must of been deformed in some way, Poror little mite will never see his/her brothers or sisters grown up, it lived only 1 day, a sad moement for Jess and myself. R.I,P little one..

MrSteve - Hi all. Ok i told you all that Jess had 6 babies, but this was a mistake it was sandy whom had 6 babies last week,last tuesday.. Well today this time it was Jess whom had 7 babies, i had to pick her up quickly to count them,lol, all seem ok, i think there might of been more as im sure i saw her eat 1, it could of been the after-birth i dont know, but it didnt look like it to me, could of been a damaged baby, but taking a good look into the nest with a BBQ stick so my scent would'nt touch them, i see there is 7 babies, just out beating sandy's 6 babies. Think thats all she going to have, she started around 9pm, now it's 10pm, 1 hour later still 7 babies. All babies will be gong to the petshop when old enought, unless some of you want to travel to SW london (UK) to collect 1 or 2 when they are old enough. Will try and get some pictures later, but my camera sucks in taking good pictures. Sandy's babies are now 1 week old and now started to grow fur, and all 6 doing well.

VoltaireHam - I now started breeding 2 hamsters. The one is young and the one is Older at look. YES, I know that Teddy Bears are solitary, too. But, They grew together, Cause of my stubborness. They seem not to fight, But they only fight ONLY Fight, In drinking water. Now the young hamster the girl, Is now Big like the older one. They seem to have peace on 1 cage, We have an only limited space for our hamsters. My Imaginations are really like the children's. Now please excuse me I think my cousin is Torturing my Hammie!

MrSteve - Hi all, ok im may have to find a new home for fluffy, she just to visious towards me, and i just cant handle her, when i put my hand in her cage she goes nuts, sometime she wont come out her house or Puzzle block. Nearly every day the last 2 weeks she been either going for my hand, or showing a bad temper aditude towards me, even when i give her treats through the bars she shatches them rapidly from me bearing teeth. Ive tried everythink but now she screams at me aswell, i had her housed under the table where it nice and dark, but i thought i try moving her and swopping places with one of the males, but she just seems to be getting worse. i asked the pet shop if he wanted her, but he said not coz she told old, (3 months) i dear give her to any of my friends,ones with hamsters,as im sure she would bite the children. i just dont know what to do now, it either finding someone who would be willing to take her from me and try and give more time and care, or hand to to a pets home which i dont realy want to do.. I just dont want to do this to her if ican , she is a nice brown longhair and cute looking but i just cant cope with the way she is acting, so unless i can find away to stop her doing this,biteing and showing treating behavior i may haveto find a way of rehomeing her. Why is she like this.? none of the other hamsters are like this, her Twin brother Scruggy has calmed down a lot more than befor,and i can stroke him and pick him up as lot more without him biteing.. So unless someone can help out with some advice i may have to rehome her withink the next 2-3 weeks. Any advice would be warmly welcome

MrSteve - My hamster Sandy just had 6 babies, didnt know untill i called her out and saw them in her house.... not sure if she will have any more, last time she had 10, this time only 6.. i had to remove them as her house was on 2nd level, and if they fell out they would of fell throught the bars and could of injure themselfs or died.. I think Jess is due to have some within 3-5 days, so i took her second level out and her tube system. little cow bit me, maybe she smelt the secent of Sandy's babies near me,even though i use tissue to remove them... I put snady's house back in on lower level, but removed the top part,so ican keep an eye on them, if i can see into the nest..lol# will keep you updated on Jess's babies if and when she has any. Oh befor you ask, i wont be keeping any of these babies, they all be going to the Petshop for sure,as he did say he would take them off my hands, depending on how many there is i spose.

MrSteve - my long hair scruffy has escaped and i cant find him anyware. I clean out his cage and left him on the floor in his cage playing on his wheel, i went out side to clean Reggies cage,and when i came back i noticed Scruffy had vanished, i saw that part of his cage was not put back correctly , i checked his house and tube, and he's not there i think he may of squeezed out the part that was a open gap.. All my hamsters are kepted in my room, junk-room where there are many boxes, bags, ext, i woundering if he could of got into one of these, i keep calling him but cant hear him anywere,and the matter worsens, i left my door open to, so he could be anywhere in the house, he could even of gotten our of the front door where there is a small gap is. Only thing i can do is leave his cage on the floor with the ladder outside so he can climb in and hope he will return, i dont have a upto date photo of him only thing is fluffy is like him so i could make a photo of her and put it on a lost sign in hope that if he did find his way out the house and someone finds him they know where to return him if he did find his way to the outside world. paulina - A couple years ago, I went through this crazy animal obsession. I mean, I love animals all the time, but I had five hamsters and two ferrets living in a TINY bedroom. Now I live in this house's master bedroom and I'm getting animal crazy again. I bought my mom fish for her birthday (her first pets), I just spent almost $300 on iguana stuff for my boyfriend (also his first pet, but he's making sure the tank is regulated before he gets the iguana), and now I pulled out a few old hamster cages. I'm giving away the Habitrail Space Station on Craigslist, but I took one look at my 20gal tank and then I thought back to this cute chocolate brown girl with a cinnamon color around her eyes that I saw at Petco last week and I'm going back for her, haha. I really hope she's still there because I could barely tear myself away from her tank. So, I just got a ferret and now I'm going back for a hamster. My parents will be very pleased. Oh! Allycat - Hi all! I haven't been on in a while...sorry about that. I have been busy. Oh... and Happy Independence Day to all you Americans. But back to hamsters.... I have been researching Roborovski hamsters for a long time now. I currently have a male robo who is super cute if I do say so myself. I really love him. But being as obbsesed with hamsters as I am I want more. (LOL) I have 7 hamster cages and two hamsters, (don't ask...) so I have cages in case they fight. I really want to breed them. But I have lots of issues. I will now put them in a list 1. I only have a male 2. My parents aren't letting me get more hamsters 3.If they did they still might not let me breed them 4. the hammies may not get along Does anyone have an idea on how I can try to get my parents to agree? MrSteve - Hi. ok some may think mating sandy a 2nd time maybe wrong, but ive decided to mate her a 2nd time now, befor she gets to old... There should be no problem this time with homeing the youngsters when they old enough, as the pet store nearest to me seems to be out of stock ofthem most times now, i asked if he still intrested in any, and he said yes,he would take them off my hands,so i hope that all goes wells. i mated Sandy wqith reggie again the other nite but he was'nt realy up to it i dont think, maybe he lost intrest, so i then used one of her son's Chucky, he was keen to go for it, so about 20-25 mins later i seperated them, must of done the job by then, tho sandy might of kepted going, but i thought that was enough time..i soon see if she is pregnat on Friday being the 4th day after she had mated, will let you know the out come,if i cant tell by then then i should know in 2 weeks time. I Doubt i will keep any myself, but 2 people said they wanted 1, wilmar took 2 of my males last time,but she passed them on to other people, she said now she rather have a 2nd female,so if sandy has any girls i know then i have a home for at least 1,and the others again as stated will go to the petstore, just hope i wont full for any myself,as i cant keep any this time around... the last set of babies i had i kepted 5 and still have the 5 here, i could rehome one of the girls now(Jess) as she has become realy Tame,but i got kinda lose to her now and would hate to part her from me and the rest of the family,as with Fluffy she is still a little tempermental and snatches her food when you give her treats, just like Scruffy was (Her Brother) and both being long hair hammies... Still Scruffy has settled down now with me, im sure he trusts me now as i can pick him up a lot more, hand feed him to which i could'nt do a while ago... I just wounder if long hair hamsters have a differant manner than short hair hamsters have.??? So anyways as i said the next bach of babies will have somewhere to go wihout any problems, there is 3 pet stores near me that will take some or all (I HOPE)..lol update on any new babies soon. P.S Oh i was going to try mate one of the younger girls, but i cant seem to know when they are on heat (LOL) so thats why i chose Sandy again as i know when she was on heat by the smell again... I think this will be the last time in mateing sandy now 2 times is enought i think, while many people would bread 1 hamster several times, i think 2 times with Sand is enough for her.

lizzi - hey everyone. hope you're all well. i bought two female robo-hamsters in march and they get on REALLY well apart from the occasional fight. this morning i noticed that one of them had two scabs on her bottom that had been bleeding. i first sperated them into different cages but they were both really sad and when i put them back together, they were really affectionate and find it hard to believe that the injuries were inflicted by the other hamster. what do i do? and does anyone know how much it costs for a vet? i need help. p.s- just in case anyone wondered, the injured is called winnie and the other is called nutmeg

KraZ4KrTrZ - We are in a bit of a panic here, My daughter has a family of dwarfs, the babies just opened their eyes this past weekend so they are about 2 1/2 weeks old now. for some unknown reason the Mommy, Dillan is attacking all of them. I have removed syrians as early as 3 weeks for the same reason and they did fine, but I'm not so sure about the dwarfs. I also believe that Dillan is expecting, again... sigh.

Piparazzi - This topic is about Roborovski hamsters. I have one named Pip. I thought maybe, since they aren't a well-known breed, and most people on this board are Syrian owners, this could help. Roborovskis (or Robos) are brown with white over their eyes, and white noses, and bellies. The rest of them are light brown. Some of them have completely white faces, and are rare. They are 3 inches long, and ar every fast. If they get out of their cage, they can be impossible to catch. They can run the lenght of four human marathons in one night, so they need a wheel much worse than a Syrian (Golden hamster, fancy hamster) does. They eat, drink, and poop less than Syrians, and they can live in pairs, but are OK on their own. They bite less than Syrians, but are exceedingly hard to train. They are skittish and bolt at sudden movements. They need a large cage with very thin bars or they can get out. They need a big cage, because they love to run, and a small cage just won't do. They are relatively new to the hamster world, and have only been around about 20-45 years. They originally are from China, and lived in the sandy areas, so hamster dust (or chinchilla dust) in a bath house or food bowl is a good idea. Bacara - Hey some of you know that I work for a animal rescue centre and I foster lots of hamsters and rehome them with suitable owners. The most I had at the same time was 17! cages galore!!! Well all my syrians passed away this year and I have been left with all my little dwarfs to rehome.... I adopted holly and Lucky is hopefully going to his new home on Monday - But Dale is still with me :) I will keep Dale if no home is found before I move down to london! Yes just got married and we are moving down south to be near where my hubby works - so I will be looking for a local rescue centre when I move to help out again! So in a nutshell - I have not adopted anymore as my Hubby thinks I need to down size due to the impending move! With Holly and poss Dale and my two piggies he has a point! But that said the rescue centre that I work for - have just advised me that a little chocolate syrian has just come in called Ruby :D she is approx 8 month old .......and yes you guessed it just have to have her!! lol.....my hubby has gone daft but I have said she needs a new home and who better than to take her on....:) So I will keep you posted as to when I will pick her up ....and hopefully my hubby will not file for divorce after 3 weeks of marraige haha -laff-

Allycat - Hi all! Has anyone heard of webs.com? It is very connected to hamsters...kinda... That website allows you to create your own website for free as long as it had .webs at the end. Such as hamsters.webs.com. I would like to point out that almost all the good hamster sites (and some not good ones) come from .webs. Granted...other great ones don't (like hamsterific) but .... shmifty5 - Okay, so here goes, my mother and brother bought a hamster for her from petsmart (I do not support petsmart or its cruelty fyi),and just recently the hamster has started acting differently. here are the symptoms: - the hamster has excessive hairloss on it's stomach, the skin appears reddish pink and the remaining hair appears tacky or sticky. - the hamster has been sleeping alot lately, it will periodically awake and roam around and act normal before returning to sleep for long times (normally the hamster is very active and seemed to sleep occasionally). - the hamster is sleeping in weird places, it will often stretches out and snoozes on it's plastic slide or perhaps in it's tubes, sometimes it will curl up in a ball and sleep in it's nest. - the hamster has been acting rather aggitated lately, but this is heavily veiled by it's overall sleepy personality (lately it's been sleepy, normally it is hyper and "alive"). - the hamster has been drinking plenty of fluids. I thought that the hamster might be diabetic but I was unsure as no site lists the hair-loss as being sticky looking (I haven't touched it's stomach myself). It's food does contain cane molasses and it has been enjoying some raisins and mixed nuts with the occasional insect (gut-loaded crickets or a small mealworm (I keep reptiles and sometimes I will give the hamster the uneaten insects)), under normal circumstances we would take the hamster to the vet but as it is we have very little money (mom is on work leave, I can't work and my brother chooses not to work, go figure) and the cost of the vet vs. 'maybe he will get better with time' both play a vital part in the fact that we can't afford the vet right now, maybe later but not right now... I really don't need a lecture on buying a 'cheap' animal and being too poor to pay the vet, I need some real help from people with similiar animals or have seen similiar cases before, please help my mothers hamster. P.S. I check all my insects and I properly maintain both the insects diets and habitats, the insects are also home raised for quality control, they are not causing this issues, unless he is allergic to them, in either case I have stopped feeding the hamster insects until this is sorted out. P.S.S. the hamster may or may not have been given a bath, it doesn't appear to have a cold nor does it act like it has a cold, it also has greasy fur on it's back and face.

snowhawk - Hi guys, been a while. No news is good news... mostly. First, my adopted Winter Whites (Lucy and Ethel) are doing fine, no babies, thankfully. Lucy is just a fatty and likes to stuff her cheeks as full of food as she can, but there's always plenty left for Ethel. I'm writing because Pascha, my Campbell's, seems to have lost her little hammy mind. Once spring rolled around, and the windows were opened on the nice days, she started chewing. And chewing. And chewing on the bars of her cage. She won't stop. She has stuff to chew on, but the bars are what she picks usually. She has different chewing modes too. There's this frantic, incredibly loud chew, and a smaller "Hey, give me attention," chew, and others in between. As soon as I look at her most times, she'll stop, only to start again when I look away. Seriously. She sits and looks at me, and waits until I'm not looking. I will reach in the cage and physically move her away when she's being really loud. She's nipped me a couple times when I do this, and nipped my fiance once. It's not a "I smell food!" bite. Tonight she bit me hard, and actually hung on to my finger when I, obviously, pulled away. Any ideas? I'm really at a loss. I don't want her to wind up like one of my rats, where we couldn't even open the door without him lunging at us. Is it the weather? I look her over all the time, and don't see any signs of injury.

Well, the other day I looked at her and she was shaking and couldn't walk too well. =/ I figured she was going to die and later that night she was laying perfectly stiff on her side. I even poked her and she didn't move. I was sad, but I didn't have time to do anything about it at the moment. Then, I came back later and she had moved and was in a different spot. The next day, she was perfectly fine and ran in her ball and climbed up her latter! She looks a little more like an old lady now, but alive. Anyone know what might have happened?

MrSteve - Today i found Reggie had escaped again from his cage, this is the 2nd time in about 1 week, i know i have been shutting the cage door all the time when i take him out and replace him. I found him down the back of the boxes where he's cage is located, i was just about lucky to see him, due to him having white on his coat, if he had'nt had a part white coat i doubt i would of seen him. I replaced him in his cage and watch some TV when i suddenlt heard a click, i looked over to reggies cage and found that he had somehow pushed the door open on his cage,and was lucky to see him befor he got out again a 2nd time today. I went over and closed the door and watched how he did it, he was chewing his cagedoor and the pressure he was putting on the door was so great he was pushing the door open. i checked the connector and found it is wearing down on the door, even though the cage is new, ive managed to make a fix by pushing the connector up and under which now locks, Even tho reggie is still is chewing the cage on the door section he now cant get out, but it make it harder for me to get him out now..lol. So a quick word of advice check your door connectors as they will wear down and will allow your hamsters to push the door down and escape. I think i will have t try and look for some kind of door clips to use,if there is anythink like this avalible.?

MrSteve - Well i kept saying i cant keep all my babies unless i got some cages, well today my son came home from going to some Party i think, he went with his mom,while i stayed in as normal.. He came to my room and said hay DAD look what ive got ya, A friend of the wife gave us a realy big cage, i could home 2 hammies in there if i made soime kind of half way block off, it has 2 top doors and 2 bottom doors. 2 parts or leveling to make a level, and a big Bridge. It also cam with some WHEELS, a Big wheel like 10-inch plus, and a 8 inch wheel, 2 feeding bowls and a water bottle, A Small hamster Comb, some Litter. All of it is realy Dusty and dirty, it needs a Real GOOD clean out, which i will do sunday or monday. I think it needs a good 24-hour soak in soapy water and disinfectant , as it is that bad, but i cant complain being it given to use free, Only Problem is coz it's so big i got no-where to put it in this room yet.lol.. well not as yet, so it means i gota do some sorting out again, but if i can make it into 1 cage with 2 compartments i could keep all of my baby hamsters i think, but how i will convert this into a 2 seperate compartment i dont know yet, as im not realy no builder,lol, i think some woodwork might be handy in doing this.... i'll take some pictures of the cage later and post it here, and maybe some of you can give me some idears on how to go about converting it. Would it be ok to home 2 hamsters in 1 cage, but slip/into 2 compartments. blocking 1 off from the other Cage must of been worth at least £75 or more i recon.

Bacara - Oh my!! Im so sorry that this person was not toasted earlier! I have deleted this user from our forum as I found his material extremely offensive and upsetting. Im sorry if you all seen his last post re the youtube footage? I have reported him to Youtube for animal cruelty as he delibrately posting videos on youtube and placing them in the pet section as nice hamsters eating etc....unfortunately this sick individual posted real sick and unreaptable footage and I hope he is removed from youtube!...I know this does happen and unfortunately the world is full of irresponsible and cruel people ..... We here on hamsterific do not condone animal cruelty and I feel for all of you lovely members who tried to help this member see sense when he put the male and female syrians together - he was totally playing everyone and wanted a reaction. His Video footage was staged and delibrate. cappucinomoo - got my hammie today, (his/her) name is Cappucino Moo, and (he/she) is kind of acting weird. Not sure if this is normal hamster behavier, but it is constantly on the wheel, whenever it sees a person it starts running on the wheel for like a half hour, and Cappy Moo doesen't want to sleep either, or chew the flavoured wood block I got it, or lick the salt lick, or DRINK. (I have not once seen it drink yet, just got hammy today) I have seen it storing away food (seed stuff, pellets, sunflower seeds, little black seeds and dried corn) I think Cappy may be stressed, because it stops for tiny rest breaks and then *ffffhhhp* back on the wheel. doesen't wanna eat the brocolli either, and I'm really worried about my Cappucinno. Is this normal stressed hamster behaviour? or is somthing wrong. :( please help!

My hamster, Skev (the male) is either a cross between a WinterWhite x Campbells or just a Campbells (the seller said WW, but I think he's a Campbells - LOL) And Razz (the girl) is a Campbells. Could we breed them even IF Skever's a WW? (I mean, would they get along and would the pups be OK?) My 2nd question: Razz is a spotted one and Skev is just a regular gray one, so what color(s) would they be? Could anyone answer these? Thanks!!!

kaity327 - so sorry i havent been on in like forever! computer crashed awhile ago and we just got it fixed(FINALLY)ok.....so today is june 22nd which means babies are 22 days old. still four of them (fur, eyes, and eating solids)They are nice and big now well, one is slightly smaller and i call him/her Runt.(havnt sexed yet and i cant tell the difference(help?) and yes ive looked at the hamster care pages and i looked at one of the babes and i still cant tell!) Thumbilina(mom) bit my sister yesterday three times???? do i need to seperate the babies and mom now?????? cause i havent seen it, but my mom(who is disgusted, exaggerates, and is paranoid about all animals) said she saw two of them humpin. i dont remember where i read it but i thought the babes dont become sexually mature till four weeks(these babes just turned three weeks) i need help like badly and fast. still no homes either!!! im so worried

MrSteve - Hi all. Ok good new, 3 baby boys have now gone, 2 went to 1 person she already has a female hamster, the one that escaped but did turn back up the same day, she taken 2 of my hamsters 1 she is keeping herself, and she is going to give one to a friend. So thats 2 these went on Wednesday. The 3rd boy went today to my sister & Brother inlaw, and there 3 year old baby, ive told them to be very carefull letting the baby holding the hamster and should supervise the holding. They brought a small single level cage, as they dont have a lot of room. The cage looked to me a cheap nasty one as it was a single level with wheel and water bottle, It had no house or feed bowl, so being a kind guy i am, i gave them a Small house, a feed bowl and some Food. He however did not buy the other required items, ie, Wood chippings, Bedding, Food, which he said he will buy tomorrow, why he didnt buy it there and then when getingthe cage i dont know, The simple 1 level cage cost £15, i could of got him somethink better for that, but he said the room they have is not enough in there single room flat so they got that one. i still have 5 babies left 3 boys 2 girls, im keeping the 2 girls, and posible 2 boys, so i still need to find a home for 1 boy. i also need to buy another 2 cages if i keep 2 boys, meaning i will have a total of 7 cages in my room.lol,and what a smell it will be when they need chaging.. hehehe, i like to keep 2 boys, but i doubt i will be able to, it the cost of the cages and food/bedding ect,which i cant afford right now. Time will tell, i will have to find home for the 1 or 2 of the boys by next week. as they be 6-7 weeks old then i think.

Well today i let 2 of my boy baby hamsters go to a new owner,making me fill a little sad, but im happy that they will be looked after as the owner already has a female Syrian hamster( i have told her not to let them play with each other as they can fight or mate, and im sure she wont want that to happen.lol im happy that 2 have now gone to a new owner though she is not going to keep both,she is going to give one of the males to a friend.So realy thats 2 new owners not 1, but she hads to keep it untill next week befor she can give it to her friend. Now 2 have gone i still have 4 males, 1 im keeping so 3 still needs to be rehomed. i still have 2 Females, these im keeping to. With the 3 males left over, i will keep them 1 more week to see if i can find new owners,if not, then i will take them to the petshop and ask if they want them, there are 3 petshops near me so im sure that 1 of them will take them from me. If only i had the room and money i would of kepted the mall, but due to lack to room and not having much money, they have to go. Well thats all realy, 2 have now gone and i will miss them, so will there mom (Sandy)and dad (reggie), and brothers and sisters.

MrSteve - Today i decided to remove the baby girls from Sandy as they seem to keep fighting, im not sure if this is play fight or real fight, as it does to me look Sandy is getting a little to rough on them, so i dug out Reggies old cage that i had cleaned out yesterday, and put the girls in there, Sandy went a little crazy or 10-min, then settled down, i think Sandy realy needed to be on her own and have a rest from all the babies, which she now can do. since moving the baby girls out i seem to be able to handle them a bit better now, they dont seem to be as scared,afraid of me, which i hope is good, even tho they still Pee and Poop on me.lol Least the Girls had extra time with mom, like 4 days extra than the boys had, boys still seem a bit visious tho. and it hard to get hold of them to handle and try and tame. maybe whne they start getting new homes they settle down with there new owners (i hope).

Well all of them were fine and are running around eating real food with their eyes open nice and furry. Today, I noticed one of them is missing a foot, and it was pretty fresh - still bleeding. I think maybe the momma hamster attacked him, but really? JUST his foot? his front foot too, i told her she was a meany. Are the babies far enough along to where I could seperate them from the momma or should I wait? I don't want the babies to get hurt anymore than they have. I went to work and came back and haven't seen the three footed baby yet, I'm hoping she didn't eat it =(

MrSteve - Ok it been like 5 weeks now and im now ready for my hamsters to be rehomed, i did have 4 maybe 5 people wanting hamsters from me, but it all chat no action, i think i have 2 who realy want them now, so im going to have some left over babies that need to be rehomed. Tumbler - Hi all. My name is Pete and I work in Japan. Last april I found an abandoned hamster. I believe a syrian and a boy. I took him home and he now lives happily in my apartment. I tried to re-home him but had no luck and to be honest I've got to be quite fond of the little chap. I've named him Tumbler. My concern is that in July I'll go to the UK for a few weeks holiday. I have a couple of choices to leave him in my apartment for a few weeks and my friend will visit every day to feed him and clean his cage. Alternatively, I can take him to a friends apartment for two weeks. The first option is that Tumbler might get lonely by himself. The apartment gets a little hot in the summer as well. The second option is that the shock of moving home for a few weeks might stress him out. He'll have to go on the train too. I don't want him to get the dreaded wet tail. This is my first hamster and I don't no what is the best for him. Please advise. Thanks a lot.

lilhampsta - I took my hamster, Skever out to play in the yard today and he was eating grass. I picked some and put it in his cage and now I'm wondering if that's okay. MrSteve - Is he a Long Haired hamster.? both adults are short haired, so if he is long-haired,then there must of been a genetic issue ,ie a long-haired was breaded with a gran parent some time back and passed on the genes to produce long-hair babies in the future.? MrSteve - I got a New Cage for Reggie today i ordered it on Ebay yesterday and it arrived today.. It is very simular to the one he has, but his one has a few adjustments, it has a tube system on it. It took about 20-mins to fix together and add his house/toys, and since he has been placed in the new cage he been running up and down his tubes at least 20 times within 20 mins, lol i think he likes it. 1 Small problem is where i have reggie normaly his old cage was an ideal place for him to be, but now his new cage has tubes, it wont fit in the location unless i put it at a side slant which ive done, so it will have to do him for now.. here is the cage he now has. Mimi - Hello everyone, Im wondering if anyone experienced in their hammies kind of strange noise as coughing or sneezing.Ive got a new syrian hammie and he is very sweet and cute and he seems to settling down quite well. He was put for adoption so I wasnt thinking for a minute and brought him home. MrSteve - hi all. well today at 6:40am i had aTear to my eye, which i normal hardly get emotional, but i Seperated the Babies from mom today, 6 Boys have been moved into 1 cage, a cage just like there Farther Reggie has, 2 level, 2 houses, 2 feed bowls, 2 bottles. It states in a few books to remove boys from mom at 4 weeks, lucky i think i have 2 girls, (least i think i do) and i have decided to keep them with mom another week or two,as im totaly out of funds to buy another cage right now. Already 1 baby boy is chewing on the cage bars of his new home, probly wanting to get back to mom, while 2 are playing in there new wheels, and the other 3 are just exploring there new home,climbing the bars, and hanging toys, which will only be for 2-3 weeks, for some while some may be rehomed to new owers in about 1 week, and that to will be a sad leaving. I think sandy is a little confuzed, looking around for her missing babies, digging upthe nest trying to find them, but i have placed the boys cage right above her on some old PC cases,so she can see & Smell them being near by. Dad Reggie, sleeping , i dont think he cares, lol. I try get some pictures of the boys in there cage this weekend ,and post here, they have grown a lot bigger, and needed to be moved anyways as mom has no more milk to offer, her Teats are back to normal, so im sure al lthe babies are weened now. Ive put a little of the old bedding into the new cage so there sent is there, ive put a small glass cup in there cage in hope they will start using that to Pee in, i did try a plastic cut, but 1 babie started to chew on it right away, so i replaced it with a class cup. Well lets hope all goes well, and that Sandy wont miss her young ones to much, i might try letting them all in together as a test into a big box time to time, but not sure if this is safe or not, i Do know the pet shop did say they normaly keep there babies with there moms for upto 6 weeks, but 6 weeks is when the boys are sexualy active, As it is the last week Sandy has come on Heat 2 times, and i had to keep a close eye on her with the baby boys, so it's best to be sorry and move them all now, i dont want another litter just yet.lol i will be keeping 2 babies myself i like to keep all 8, but i just dont have the room, or money to buy 8 cages, and to feed 2 adults and 8 baby hamsters.lol i most likely keep 1 boy 1 girl, and mix bread them when they are older. Well thats it, will update more later. but boys seem to like there new home /cage and are having fun. l8rs

oats1999 - Some of you might not remember me, since I have been inactive. Anyway, one of my hamsters, Pika, has passed away. He died for no apparent reason. I have no idea what caused his death. Water was clean and food bowl was to the brim. He was very young. Also before the day he died I checked him out and he was just squatting in his igloo, very motionless. It was very stupid of me to think nothing was wrong. He died when I was at school, doing math. R.I.P Pika. If you have any clue what caused him to die, PLEASE TELL ME!!!!!!!!

MrSteve - yo. I was watching a downloaded movie today and as i turned around i saw one ofthe babies in the wheel, now this little guy has to be Adventours, as he climbed the ladder to moms level where her wheel is and started playing in the wheel itself. I was very suprised and found it realy funny as i didnt think they would even adventure onto a wheel untill they 4 weeks old, well this little guy made me laugh so much i managed to get a picture of it, and capture it on Camcorder to. I have 2 smaller wheels that i can let the babies ues, but cage space is limited, so i put one in on the ground floor and hopefully they start using that, i took the little guy out of moms and placed him in the small wheel, but i think he either lost intrest or did'nt like th color of the new wheel i just added (being Bright Orange/pink).. here is the image of the little guy in moms wheel, it soe fun and cute. [img]http://i50.tinypic.com/1j2c6h.jpg[/img] hope they all get to play in there new wheel soon, not sure how im going to get another (2nd mini) wheel in such a cramped cage as there is already a stand alone water bottle, & wheel and jam jar lid for Porridge already in the cage. Oh yea some babies are not taking water from the bottle, this is good news as i thought they would'nt drink water till they 4 weeks old. so that 2 great things they are learning on there own in just 2 days.. I'll try get a image/picture of them playing in the new wheel when they start using it, just hope they wont keep climbing the ladder to play on moms wheel..lol Wicked or what

MrSteve - SAD NEWS, one ofthe babies died, -cry- dont know how,it looked healthy to me last nite,it had even been out into the cage a couple of times,maybe it had a fight with one of the others or with mom, He was one of the 2 i was going to keep, the dark haired one, i was checking on them and counted 9, i moved a little of the bedding and just found the head & that was all that was left over mom and babies had eaten the rest of the dead babie, i got no idear how it died, im hopeing the others will survive. Reggie was making a strange noise last nite, maybe he scenced it and was crying of the loss, he never made this noise befor.. It's a shame it died as like i say i was going to keep this one myself, but now will have to keep one of the others. such a crawl world. Ive buried the head in the Garden, 9 out of 10 left. -cry- -cry- R.I.P Litlle one, what a 2 week life you had,was it worth being born.?

lilhampsta - I think my hamster, Skever, is a cross between a Winter White and a Russian. He is kind of the darker color, but doesn't have the stripes on his sides, just the one going down his back. He is really big compared to my friend's Campbell hamster. Compared to my friend's WINTER WHITE hamster, his ears are a little on the large side and so are his eyes! I have compared them and I know all hamsters are different, but what breed is he!!! I will try to get a pic of him and show you if you need one.

FluffyPickle - I got a hamster three weeks ago and she had pups around the fourth day of her being a part of our family. The babies are now about three weeks old. They have hair but their eyes are not open yet. I am concerned because she has made a new nest and only had one pup in it. It does not appear that the other four in the old nest are getting the attention they need. I picked one up yesterday night to see if they were still alive and they are. The one I picked up was excluded and by the food bowl the next morning. What is going on is she abandoning four of her pups?

MrSteve - Well Sandy came on heat today, and her back was up, and her head was down, was kinda strange watching half the babies chaching and sniffing her rear end. i know babies are not sexualy active for 6 weeks, but i had to make sure by ringing up the blueCross to make sure she was fine to stay with her babies. BlueCross said it ok she can stay with them,as they checked there book. So those who has syrian hamsters and who has just has a litter, you may find that the mom will come on heat every 4-5 days, dont worrie about the babies trying to mate with the mom, as they can not mate with her untill they are at least 6 weeks old, and by that time you should or removed all bibies from her by then, so she will be fine with the babies till then. Phew, i had to check as i dont want her getting pregnant again just yet (LOL) man Sandy smells sometink bad today, cant wait till the smell clears... lol

MrSteve - yo, she's a mom. I woke up around 1:15pm today to goto the toilet, as i not had much sleep worrieing about sandy not sleeping much, when i got back she looked still, i called her out of her box, she did'nt come, i called her again offering some cucumber, she came running with a babby dragging behind. This was at 1:21pm, I saw the baby drop just outside the nest, i dropped the cucumber in the nest and said (sandy you haing babies, sorry girl, go back and give birth t the rest). And she must of understood, coz she turned back, and sniffed on the floor of her cage found the one that wass dropped ,but the small squeeking noise it just started to make, she picked it up and returned to the nest. I just sat and watched for few mins thinking it was just the one,as it very had to see if there was any more babies,the way she made her nest, she moved out the cage for a second to get a drop of water from her bottle doing so, i saw not 1 baby,but 2, but it on the way back into her nest she was kinda like if she was stepping or sitting on one,as all i could see was the babies leggs in the air, but about 3-5 mins i hear russling in her nest i check and found that she has removed the baby she was sitting or stepping on,and placed in in front of her, How many babies she will have i dont know, ive seen 2 so far, i just HOPE & PRAY she and all the babies will suevive,eve how many she may have.. Problem is she has decided to have them under the plastic cocering used as her house, it's kinda small and im sure she cant stand up in it,and must be having them laying or squotting down,, i would like to remove the plastice but afraid this may harm the babies thats she had so far, so ii'll just have to leave it and pray every think will go ok, if she has any dead/dieing babies i wont be able to see or get them, so what should i do. just leave her in peace.? will she just eat the dead babies, or will she remove them from the nest and dispose of them later.?### Well i gota keeps checking here time to time,just to see if she is ok. I thought Hamsters had babies later afternoon,evening times now 1:30pm..??? will update babie news as it comes in.

MrSteve - Hi all, ok a Friend of mine (who might be having one of my baies hamsters has a problem) She had a hamster of her own, she had it given to her as a gift from another friend, her son who is like 3-4 years old attended to keep taking the cage from 1 room to another why i dont know, but on Sunday i think it was it escaped. My friend (wilma) told me she got up to goto the toilet around 3am sunday and it was there playing happly in his wheel, when she got up again around 10am, she noticed that the hamster had gone, she checked the house and tube, and nothink, so she came to me and asked what to do. She took me to her house and i had a look around under chairs/tables/ around boxes and bags,all rooms,ect but nothink, could'nt find there hamster. The cage is situated on the Kitchen floor, next to a cuboard, and i notice a big hole where the cuboard is, i myself think it has gone into this hole and into the floorboards. (Why she put the cage on the floor in the first place i have no idear, and why she lets her 3-4 year old keep moving the cage from 1 room to another is stupid, and i told her so) There are many places it could of got away and escaped to, in the kitchen alone there is the hole in the side cuboard, gaps,around the cooker, and a lenghtly gap behind more cuboards behind the cooker. What i did was leave small bits of mixed hamster food near each gap/hole i found and told wilma to check to see if the food has been touched every couple of hours, i placed bits of food in each of the other rooms and showed her where i had left it,and told her to check them to. I also told her to leave the cage where it is for now and leave the cage door open for the next couple of days as if it does eat the scattered food, and runs out, it should make it's way back to it's cage (hopefully) Of if it gets to cold under the floorboards it may return to it's warm bed/house. This happened yesterday sunday, ive told her to ring me if she finds it or returns back to the cage. As i said the kitchen does had some hiding places it might of gone to, but we're sure it may of gone in the hole where the cuboard is that had a exit to the floorboards. If it gets in there it could make it's way down to the ground floor house,and the owners of the ground floor has 2 Cats, and if the cats find it im sure they will catch it/kill it and eat it, so i told wilma to ask them to keep a look out and hear out for any noises. I also now find out that wilma to has a small plauge of house mice, so if food does get eaten it could be either the mouse or the hamster. If anyone else has any idears how to find and get back the escaped hammy please let me know. cheers

Driven - Well, as most of you know my last hamster Maestro passed away. Today I brought home a new little guy. I have to check and make my best judgement if it is a male or female still. But his/her name is Oarian. =) I will post pics soon. This little guy or girl is a major chewer! Maestro never was so this is new for me. I think he has OCD because he seems really obssesed with it. lol He might be a little bit of a trouble maker.

gothhamsterr - Everyone has some really memorable hammy moments--the silly, outrageous, mischievous, and downright sweet things our hammies have done. So post 'em. Here's one(this one's my favorite): I was eating some cookies and milk with Poochy a couple of years ago, and I was sharing bits of cookie with him. I was also working on Wolfgang at the same time, so maybe I wasn't keeping my eye on Poochy enough--because the next thing I knew he put his paws on the edge of my cup and tipped it over, spilling milk EVERYWHERE! the mess spread all over the place and on me, too(but miraculously WG was unharmed!). Guess what Poochy did next? Give up? He took like 3 licks of the spilled milk and then waddled away to a dry spot on the bed to clean himself off! And how could I possibly be mad when he pulled a move like that? Guess he wanted to be in on the 'milk' part of milk and cookies! This fiasco is still Poochy's most famous stunt.

libbyoc - I know Robo Dwarf aren't really supposed to be as cuddly as a Syrian hamster but I am concerned with my Robo Dwarf. He has become nippy lately- he's never ACTUALLY bit someone to the point where they bleed but he will try to bite or will 'gently' nip a person's hand if they try to pick him up or touch him (basically if it is sitting in his cage, he'll curiously sniff the fingers and then try to bite). I hand feed him treats every other day or so and the only time I get to pet him is when he is chewing on his treat or when he is in his hamster ball. I'm not sure if he's just curious or territorial but I would like some advice on how to get him used to people and being handled. I understand that Robo dwarfs are really just for 'observation' but I feel that it is cruel just to watch him all the time....

MrSteve - Hay all Man i had a right old morning today, all nite it was either reggie chewing his cage, when he stopped, sandy started chewing her cage, baby hamsters crying & Squeeking non stop. Gee, and not only that as i did not sleep, i decided to go and make a coffee, A friend who is staying looked out into the back yard and found all the trash bags ripped open by the local foxes we have, I told her no way am i goingto clean the mess up, reason why the foxes ripped the bags open was coz the wife had BBQ for Friends on sunday, and BBQ for more Friends on monday, there was no way in hell was i going to clean up the mess, so the girl who's staying with us, cleaned it up instead..lol Anyway that's not half of it, i was making coffee for myself and some Creamy Oak porridge for Sandy and Reggie, when i got back into my room i noticed 5 babies out the nest near the tube, i think sandy had dragged them out herself again, and not only that i also saw one up in the tube,near the top, I paniced, (what should i do, i said to myself,) Spoon time,as i grabbed the spoon MOM sandy rescued the one in the tube, she picked it up and took it to the nest, but left the other 5 at the bottom, so i though of taking a couple of pictures befor i help out to replace them to the nest. Once photos done i picked up the babies in a spoon 1 by 1, letting sandy (who was in the nest) see that babies was still out , she took them off the spoon and i handed them to her, and that was that. Had to tell you Folks the morning i had, lol funny yes and no, but im damm well tired, andi gota go out later atound 10am to pet shop to buy some new Wheels and Bottles for when the babies are ready to come out and play and start drinking water. Bacara, They are ,well some are eating solids, i was cheking them around 3am and i saw one with food in it's hand..:-) Oh yea i also managed to get a new photo of Sandy sleeping and babies feeding on her teats, milk time. MrSteve - Hay. I was checking on Sand's babies while she was playing in her ball, and i saw one of the babies Eating some Poo,Droppings.. (lol) so im sure some will be eating Dry/Solid foods soon. Also some other news, i think most of them are Boys, i wa trying to see what sex they was, though it's a little eairly, i notice 2 with nippples (Females) and i think the other 8 was Males, but not 100pct certan on this as they was wiggling around a lot. If i do have 2 girls & 8 boys i will be keeping 1 of each for sure, but which ones i dont know yet.

MrSteve - Hi all Just like to know when babies can be handled, ive been told 2 weeks from an Expert, but when handling the babies human cent is left on the babies (Correct) so wont the babies be kill/eaten by there mother.? Even if you pick them up for a few seconds at a time. im a bit concerned about this, i dont want my babies being killed and eaten, not saying Sandy will do this, as i did touch one of the babies by mistake, when moving some crapp from them,and she was ok with it on Thursday. hamster17 - Some hamsters nip alot so here's how to stop that. Hamsters get annoyed when you blow into their face (this does not hurt them just annoys them) so if you have a hamster that likes to nip at your fingers try this trick. The next time your hamster nips you pick them up say "no" and blow (gently) on their face. Only do this if the really chomp on you or if it hurts because if you do this every single time they nip you they might get the impression every time they're held they'll be annoyed and nip more. Soon enough your hamster will get the point and won't nip you. Hope that helps people with hamsters that nip.:)

yul - this month i lost 2 of my beloved hammies. Rukia (died yesterday) and momoko ( died on 6th May). both of them born in my house about 1 year plus ago. i took rukia to see vet one week ago coz i notice that she doesn't each much, she become thinner and her bottom is wet and she cant walk properly. so the vet gave her antibiotic and vitamin B. i gave her the medicine and praying she will survive.. but one week later...I will always miss all my departed hammies. R.I.P Hammy, Blacky, Dabu, Tamtam... Miss u guys:(

simplykb - Hello, I have a Russian hamster who has a possible food allergy. I adopted him from work, he's been in the back room for a few months and they've determined it wasn't any sort of parasite, and that nothing is physically wrong with him. The vet suggested a food allergy. He goes through phases of itchy crusty skin, crusty ears, crusted skin around his limbs, etc. Sometimes his ears are quite red and irritated looking. I've determined its not an environmental allergy, since he's been moved to my house and has the same issues. I can't figure out what the trigger is. He's on Carefresh Ultra, was on aspen and regular Carefresh at the store, didn't seem to make a difference. I'm feeding him Hazel Hamster with Mazuri pellets, and I've decided to start selecting certain things to pick out and see if he gets better or worse. Any suggestions? I also have been giving him a drop of VitaDrop hamster vitamins and a drop of FerreTone Skin and Coat Supplement. What foods do you think he would be allergic to? How long should I pick one kind of food to take out? Any help is appreciated :)

gothhamsterr - When we were shopping for hamster food, we accidentally bought rat/mouse food for Schnoodles. but the weather got so horrible we couldn't go out and return it, so we decided to see if it would work for her. She really likes it, and I think it's way better than hamster food. So far she's nearly 2 years old and still truckin' and she's been eating the rat food for months. I think it's better for her. Also, it comes with unshelled peanuts, sesame clusters, toast and pineapple pieces. Normally, we'd have to pay an extra 5 bucks for a whole seperate package if we wanted to get all that stuff for Schnoodles. Works for me, Schnoodles, and definitely my mom.

FluffyPickle - I bought a Black Bear Hamster last thursday and she gave birth to five pups yesterday. I have read the Hamster Care article on pups and it has answered most of my questions. I have learned that the nest should not be disturbed for ten days. After ten days can I clean the cage? Can I also I handle the pups? My other concern is I do not want the pups to mate. Is four weeks when I seperate them? How old should they be when I find them homes? Are there any tips on how to find a home? Lastly since I have not had my hamster for over a week is not handling her because she had babies a good idea? Is this going to hurt our bond? Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for all the questions but I was not expecting babies at all.

MrSteve - Yo, ok i know i did a topic on this befor, but im to lazy to find it.lol Ok i realy need help in stopping my 2 Hamsters chewing there cage bars, it now taking effect on there nose , it rubbbing away the hair, and this is worrieing me, they both are chewing there cages, and ive tried everythink. here what ive tried. 1: Flavored Wooden Bricks. 2: Apple tree Branches.. 3: Dog biscutes, and Food Sticks 4: spraying the bars with Pet Friendly Spray Fragrance. 5: Rubbing Lemon juce on bars, but removed after reading lemon can harm hamsters. 6: More Wooden Non-Flavored Chew toys. All these worked for a couple of hours then failed from then on wards...Also this is keeping me awake far to much and im not getting enought sleep at night, i now sometime end up if to bad putting the 2 hamsters in the hall way,which at times can get chilly, i dont want to keep doing that as i dont want my Hamsters getting Colds or ill. So if anyone else has any idears please let me know.. I do have the Bin/Box, but to be honest, there just not enough room for there toys to go into the cages, and even still they still found a way to chew the Bin/box doors i made on it.lol so anyone got more help let me know.. Oh the one that worse at it now is Sandy, Reggie has cut down a bit chewing on his bars. Cheers

MrSteve - Hi, me again about my Sandy.. Ok she due to have her litter hopefully sunday, that be 16 days then, if not monday. Questions this time is. when she has her babies, i know im not to pick up the babies for 14 days, or little longer, but what about Sandy..??? When do they start drinking water as ive ordered a Stand up water bottle as they wont be able to reach the on i have inside the cage, so the one ive order can be placed inside the cage and easy acces for them. Here what ive ordered. ..click me! Can i still pick sandy up after a few days she has given birth, of do i need to leave her alone for the same amount of time.? 14 days.. Not many books tell you about when the mother can be re-handled, again,so i need to know, i dont what her thinking im ignoring her.. I also like to hand feed her to,even though she get a full bowl of food, but i do hand feed her treats.. Can treats still be given to her after the babies have been born..?? Cheers .. CrescentScar - My Chinese Dwarfs eat a mix and a few carrot chunks each day, along with some pepitas and a peanut every now and then. The ignore most of the fiber-type bits, but I do hear them chawing on them every now and then. They really, really like the in-the-shell sunflower seeds that come in their food. My question is, whenever I look at bird food, I see this mix of seeds that I think they might like. Can anyone see any reason why this would be bad for them? Seriously, it's like a 20 lb bag of in-the-shell sunflower and pumpkin seeds for like $5 US. Any suggestions on getting them to eat the pellets?

Valentor - Hey all, I have 2 male and 1 female (pet store messed up, but oh well) dwarf hamsters. They live in the CritterTrail begining cage, with the burrowing area attachment. Last night Grace had babies, I went to clean the cage this morning and saw them so I replaced food and water so as to not disturb them. She has her nest in the upper part of the main cage (the part the tube connects to) and the food and water is in the main area. Should I move some food up to the nest/ upper area since the pups will not be able to crawl up or down the tube for a while? What about moving the nest down to the main area after a few days? Trying to get photos was inpossible she just wouldnt keep still.lol..Ok heres what i got. Im sure she be even bigger around Saturday..? MrSteve - Hi. Well sandy was busy making up not just her normal bed, but she started doing a nest out side near the cage door, after doing this i checked up on her as she went very quiet, i was able to look into her main Plasic box nest where she's been sleeping and found her on her back with all paws up, this kinda scared the hell out of me, i thought she was dead, but i called to her and she moved and rolled over on her side, and just went back to sleep. Do hamsters normal do this, specialy Pregnate ones, i later thought she did this to get some weight of her feed, i also checked Google and found that some hampster do like to sleep on there backs, this shows they are happy and content, but i must admit it ready did scare me, untill i read the info on hamsters sleeping on ther backs. Well 3:35am im going to try get some sleep, i think sandy may sleep well now as out of the last 36hours i think she only slepted 5 hours if that, she was to content in playing in her wheel, eating, drinking and just watching me most of the time, and coz we had loads of people around today making hell of a noise,that kepted her awake alot, while Reggie yook no notice of the noise...lol Well im going to check Sandy 1 more time then im off to sleep.. MrSteve - Hi.. ok i brought 2 bags of mixed unsalted nuts today 1 for me 1 for the hamsters.. I just like to double check they are allowed to eat the following as these are in the bag. •Almonds •Brazil Nuts •Hazel Nuts •Pecans •Peanuts •Walnuts And Raisins Ive tried them on Walnut, they loved this, same with Brazil nuts, so hopefully they will eat the others, they like raisins to. There what i seen they can eat on another forum, but i just need to double check they these are all fine. •Nuts •Shelled Almonds •Beechnuts •Brazil Nuts •Cashews •Hazel Nuts •Pecans •Peanuts •Pistachios •Sweet Chestnuts •Walnuts NON Nut foods.. Veggies & Fruit Ive tried these so far and they like them to. Apple. Red Grape Cucumber Peas Cheese Dawf Beans These i give as treats differant times of the week, in very small amounts like 1/3rd of a finger-nail size, as i dont want to give them to much much in case it spoils. But can Hamsters Eat all the listed nuts as baove.??? Steve

kay2088 - Hi everyone, I am going to be moving overseas (Canada to the UK) in about 3 and a half months. I was wondering if it's possible to bring a hamster on a plane? It's a campbell's dwarf, and she is about 6 months old right now. I love her dearly, and my boyfriend and I would really like to bring her with us, but I also realize that the air pressure on a plane (having just been on one 3 days ago) would probably be dangerous for a hamster? I contacted an agency that relocates pets, it's based in the United States. They gave me a quote of $3500 USD... I don't have that kind of money. So has anyone done this, or have any information about it? Am I better off just giving her to someone that I know can take care of her? Thanks!

Driven - We only had him for 2 or 3 months! I'm really confused as to what happened! He had water and food and the good kind of shavings that I looked up and made sure that I was getting him a good kind that wouldn't make him sick like some do! All I can think of is that I made a little thing for him. I wanted him to have fun in his cage and have things to do so I took a shoe box, cut a hole in each side and taped together toilet paper roles to go through the one hole through the shoe box and to the other side and into his little house. I don't know if it could have been the scotch tape? But I looked up online and people had used scotch tape to make things for their hamsters, so I thought it was safe for them... He didn't die in the tube or anything... He died up on the second level of his cage in open air. I don't know if I did something wrong or what... Can anyone make any sense of this? He seemed happy and healthy just a few days ago! :-(

Kitaine - I got Peewee last August and he's always been very active, as in always coming when I call, waking up as soon as I get home from work to see me, and always running in his wheel. As of yesterday, he has been lethargic, he was pretty much in his nest all yesterday and when he leaves his nest he just sits in one spot in his cage, and he has been scratching a lot around his face. When I checked today, underneath his chin was pinkish and it looked like there was hair loss there and also there could be a small amount of hair loss between his eyes, above his nose. He also has not been eating. Not even his favorite treats. I'm very worried about him because he's definitely not acting like he normal does. Oh, and he smells, and I've never had that problem with him until now. I hope someone can please help me figure out what to do! P.S He's a dwarf hamster.

MrSteve - Ello, ok i know i had a thresd about Dwarf Beans, but this is about 2 types of Green Vegibles.. (Smile) Ok what does your hammy like the most. I tried Reggie on the Dwarf Beans,(raw) and he just wouldnt touch them, But with Sandy he seemed to like them,which i thought was strage, why does 1 like them and not the other. I also tried Green Peas, i blitzed them in the microwave for 1-min. 30 seconds, and let them cool down, i gave 1 to Sandy, and many she enjoyed it, Reggie was sleeping so i left him alone, when he woke up, a couple of hours later though the pea had dried up a little, it was still soft inside, i gave it to him and he alos enjoyed the pea. I later found out that it's best not to microwave food for hampsters is this correct.?? if so i hope it not done no harm to them both, it was only 1 pea each,nothink more, and yea i microwaved them as it was quicker to do, i will be putting the peas in future in hot water to defrost next time... so all in all, you could say PEA'S WON it by 2 to 1 over the Green Dwarf Beans, What do your like to eat.?? LOLOLOL - Hey guys,im a new member,owner of 1 dwarf hamster.(Campbells) Anyway,the food I stated in the title.its a all in one,treat and food pack.Since the treats and food are mixed,do you think my adorable dwarf would get diabetes?I take out all the corn(leave 2 pieces,so she enjoys.).But then theres treats.(not that much sunflower seeds)The food has ZooVita bites,which help teeth&gum.it includes nuts,seeds/grains,cereals,and other stuff,and its VERY fun to watch her eat.Fun colours because of variety,and her hoarding instinct is coming in,so I guess it replicates the food from the wild.She is tame now(I mostly hand feed her with stuff that looks like treats in the food.)It is very healthy I think.It has healthy ingredients.Her fur is alot softer,so I guess ill keep her on it,mixed with carefresh food and kaytee lab blocks.(2 seedmixes,plus lab blocks all mixed,SO much variety since carefresh is a seedmix too) Well,my review question thingy is done :)

Allycat - Hi all! I know I recently posted a message saying what breed...but this is different! LOL. Okay...well I really want to know what breed my hamster is. The pet stores call him a Fancy Dwarf but.... I have a website where I post pictures of my hamster. One, Mocha, is a Roborovski, and I am sure of that. Then there is Sammy. Winterwhite or Campbell? MrSteve - Hi Ok ive looked on many forums, about giving Pregnant Hampsters milk, and find many give differant answers. some say Cows milk is fine, at Room Temp. Some say giving Milk Any type can Harm hampsters. Some say never Give hampster milk Some say tinned milk or human Baby milk is fine. Some say Cows milk diluted in with her water bottle. Should i give sandy any milk, to help her in her pregnancy, and after the birth of her pups. I put them both in the box again tonite just to see what would happen and to see if Sandy was still on heat, but they just ran around the box showing no intrest, i even did the Back Stroke on her back and that show no reaction, so im sure she is pregnant, so do i give her milk, Yes or No,,if yes which milk should i give her, and how much each day.? Please help out if ya can as i dont want to be doing the wrong thing, If they could cope with out milk in the wild, im sure they can cope in captitivty.??? Cheers.. Steve

MrSteve - hi all, ok since ive had Reggie and sandy, ive had some people who says they would love to have a baby hampster to, so i decided to try and mate Sandy and reggie.I know this is not a simple job, and understand it wont always work first time around.. Yesterday i tried for the forst time, i put them in neutral ground, a Cardboard box. I left t hem inside for 15 mins, and it kinda went pear shape, it looked as ifthey was going to fight a couple of time, so i moved them apart with some cardbard. After 15 mins was up i let them out and put back in ther cages.. Not sure why but Reggie seemed to be very quiet the rest of the night, nice for me, as i got some sleep.lol, he did seem him normal self during the daytime. Today i tried a 2nd time, and another 15-mins, after chasing each other around and failed to mate a 2nd time, i took them out and put in the cage,again Reggie seemed to be like he was yesterday, kinda quiet, and looking a little sad, maybe another nite i may have some sleep..??? I will try again tomorrow, as in the books, the Female in in circle once every 4 days, so im not sure when she is ready, some books also say if she smells musky then she in in heat. If they dont make the contact tomorrow i will try again friday,as that will be the 4th day... any advice on how to get them to mate the correct times would be of help as if nothink works by friday i probley give in till next month...

Hamham - hi im new here in hamsterific.com and i really need help guys my hamster :( Chuchu has a cold and the worst of it she got bloated and fell down the stairs on my house i was so shocked she jumped on my hands and fall down :( her nose was bleeding and i try my best to wake her up by rubbing her head and thank God she's ok but her 2 leg was not moving it concerns me more :( she has a cold for 2 days and she also got bloated :( and worst of all her two legs does not move :( i dont want chuchu to go away :( shes my only friend i got since last 2 years :(

MrSteve - Well im totaly stunned what to do now.??? I know it might be normal for Hampster to gnore things, but not metal surely.??? Reggie just wont quit chewing his bars, ive seen on a few other sites that Cage chewing on the bards could cause Brain damage to hampsters,and it getting me worried why he wont stop chewing his bars. Heres what ive done to try stop him chewing his bars. 1: Put in wooden Chew flavored toys. 2: Hanging wooden toys, (he chewed this for 5 mins then no more.) 3: Stalt Tab for Hampsters.(not that this would stop him,but i tried it) 4: tried to give him treats, that didnt work, 5: put him in a old Tank with his house,bedding that didnt work, he just went crazy jumping all the time. 6: sprayed some of his Fragrant spray on bars but that didnt work. 7: Rubbed on some lemon juice from a lemon onto the bars, i think he like it, made him chew even faster...lol, but i wiped it off 5 mins later. 8: I blow on him or tap his nose, but that dont work either just comes back for more. 9: I just got some dog biscutes, he nibbled on that for 1 min then stopped,wont touch them anymore, given to me as a trial from pet store guy. 10: Got a Brance from my apple tree from Garden, i washed the branch and dried it, then put in cage, left room, he chewed the bark for 5 mins, then just went off it, wont chew it any more. I think ive tried everythink and still he keeps chewing his cage bars, i brought a big box today and will be working on making a custom cage with little amount of metal fencing if possible, but will need to use some for the top and for some side parts, but will limit the sides to small peaces. Only way to stop him is to keep him in his ball more time, but i cant keep him in the ball all night, max ive seen you can keep a hampster in a ball is 2 hours. so if anyone else has any idears how to stop him chewing his bars please let me know.

phillycheese - Hey All, About 2 1/2-3 weeks ago my poor little girl got her foot tangled in some bedding. Her limb died and she ate it off. I was really worried about her for the longest time, but thankfully she pulled through. After playing nurse-maid and force feeding her Pedialyte she finally started coming back around. She's now eating more veggies, meal worms, and even her dry food. Since she is eating, she now also has more energy which means she’s running around more. This is where I need all of your help! Does anybody know of any softer toys that I can get her? She really loved her wheel, but now she can’t use it. Since she’s so small and her injury so recent I am a little wary of letting her play on hard plastic toys. She has some cardboard tubes in her cage, and her other toys, but does anyone have any other suggestions? Anything possibly homemade or anything?

hamster17 - I've been hamstersitting my best friends hamster while shes in Aulstrailia. Yesterday I was cleaning his cage when I noticed he only had three toes on one of his front paws. On his other paw he has four toes. Any ideas why he's missing a toe?

MrSteve - hi all. Think regie had a enjoyable day today.? well today i got some goods i ordered from Ebay, a pack of 4 wooden treats. his running around ball, and we brought from local shop, some stick treats, yogurt Drop treats, ball treat disspencer, and a 3pack wooden veggie pack to help with his teath. While Reggie was awake today i put him in his new walk around ball, at first he was confused i think as he just sat there for a few seconds looking around, but once he moved,and the ball moved, he just loved it, im sure, he stay in in for 5 mins just rolling around in the ball, untill i took him out as didnt want to tire him to qucikly. I put him in his cage, and he found the stick treat hanging on the bars, which he just loves, he didnt go much on the yogurt treat, or the 2 wooden treats i put into his cage as yet. I left him and he went back to sleep. Later in the day 9pm, he woke up, i let him seattle a few mins then picked him up and put him in he Ball again, this time he had a longer play time as my 3 kids was watching him, we let him explore out side the room and into the hall way, my son show the ball with reggie inside but she just said get that thing out my face..(LOL) we let reggie play a little longer in the ball, total of about 10-minutes, then as i went to get him out he tried to nipp my finger but i got it away from him befor he drew blood., then the next time i went to get him out the ball he was ok. i put him back in the cage a few mins later, after letting him run over my arms, and when hewas safely in his cage , by 14 year old daught did a stupid thing, sheshouted BOO to reggie and made him jump, i shouted at my daughter to get out the room and never do that again, i could of slapped her, but i didnt i just said dont ever do that to reggie again he a devenceless little might,if you dont like hmapsters dont come and see him, as she scare to even pick one up, Reggie seems fine though now, maybe was scared a little, but no real harm done. Well reggie today made me proud of him, he's been awake more today, he checked around his cage a lttle more to get use to it, climbed on his house and had a good look around. he even went in his wheel (one in cage) for 2 seconds today, lol Ive notice when he take stuff to his house to make up his bedding he seemd to ramm as much bedding and wood chips into his mouth and then take it up into his bed in the house, he put so much in his mouth, his cheeks bulges out, I thought he was going to chock himself at one time as he juttered, then went up to his house then came out with a empty mouth. He even some how got a full yogurt shuffed into his mouth without biteing it into smaller peaces, then takingthat up to hist house and taking it out....just how much stuff can a hampster put into his mouth in one go....lol I was watching him,and now see he started to knore the cage bars, i told him no, and took him away, and said to use his wooden toys, not that he would understand..lol but is cage knoring ok,will it heart them, why do they do this.? Anyways, Reggie made me proud of him today, he was awake longer, and played with some of his toys, eat some of his new treats, had a fun time in his run around Ball.... I have got a small treat ball dispencer for him, but i think it to big for him to rool around right now, so i will hold back on giving that to him for a couple of weeks. Well thas it. a good day i must say, he's now gone back to sleep, and im going to be doing the same thing myself soon..... MrSteve - Hi all, Is Salt licks of for Hamsters, i got my 2 Hammies some today, as they only have 1 holder i had to buy 2 packs, each pack comes with 2 salt wheels and 1 holder. Ive put them in the Cage and Sandy has already tried it, and seems to like it, reggie is asleep,and dont know 1 is in his cage yet,so not sure if he will like it. some sites say Salt is bad for them, some say they are good for Hamsters, the one i got has the following Natrium/Sodium/ 40pct Phosphor/Phosphorus/ 0.08pct Kalzium/Calcium 0.00pct you get 2 salts 1 holder for £1:49 If People say they are no good they why do many companies produce them for pets, and why do i see other people say they are good for Small Pets, im pretty sure this is differant type of salt than we hunmans use CORRECT./? Bacara - Im sorry that I have not been on in a few days :( .... My poor poor little boy Dexter has crossed the bridge to team up with his pal Ebony -cry- He passed on the 16th of April and has left a huge void in my heart....I adopoted him from the rescue I volunteer at, last year. He was in a real bad way with his hind legs when I got him, bless! He was never able to walk like other hamsters or sit on his hind legs - but that never bothered him ....he was a fighter. The vet stated that he will thrive with the correct care, so I gave him a second chance. I loved him so much - will miss you Dexy.....big hugs and have fun with Ebs xx

MrSteve - Hi, ok yesterday all was fine, i was able to pick her up and handle her without any problem, but today (sunday0 i got a Bite from her and it drew blood, luckly it was only a small bite and not a lot of blood, a few drops, but it hert a bit and my finger throbs..lol i think this happened due to she not long woke up, and could be looking for a bite to eat,FOOD, and thinking my finger was the food. lol My Hands fill a little numb,maybe coz it a little shock im suffering with.??? Ok i know Hampsters are ment to be clean, but should i ring the doctors tomorrow for a TB booster.? I was once bitten by a Wild house mouse about 3 years ago, and im sure i had a booster, but cant be 100pct positive, i did ringup thehospital, butthey said they wont be able to tell me if i had a Booster or not and would have to contact my GP, but if my finger starts getting swollen, RED, and very painfull i should got down and get i checked out and get some antibotics,if needed in my local hospital. There is ment to be a 72-hour leaway to check up on symptoms thoughout the day. It all depands on the Hampsters Family background i have read on some forums, if they have been from a brew from wild hampsters aand then tamed i should worrie, but if not then i should be ok, but im sure this little begger (Sandy) has been birthed from a normal hampster brew.? So just any suggetions if i should seek medical advice let me know, befor making myself even more of a fool .lol

MrSteve - hi all. ok some questions about Sand, hopefully ya can help. 1: Ok at first she would'nt go into her house she was gathering everythink up into 1 big Bed in the corner, Now she is going in the house, but still building her other Bed. it like she has 2 now, but spend most time in the plastic house, but time to time might go to the other bed in the corner..Why is this. Could i have been given a Preggy Hammy.?? 2: ok she now settled in a little, im able to stroke her some times, but if i lay my hand down to offer a treat, she'll rather try and eat my finger then the treats. So will this stop, or do all females bite, how am i to get her out and put her in the Ball when it arrives.. 3: i know she is Eating and Drinking ok, some times i have to squeeze the bottle for her as this bottle i got with the cage just sucks, it dont let out hardly any water, but i know she is drinking, but i dont see her PEE much, i look in the corner where she had done some pee befor, but very little, is this normal or does she just pee when im not looking or around.? or is she not taking in to much water due to this crappy bottle, i hope to buy another water bottle in a day or 2. 1 good thing she now playing in her Cage wheel a lot more now.. cheers. MrSteve - Hi, just wanted to know if anyones Hammy can do tricks, ive seen a few funny ones on video on the net, the best one i saw was 1 Hammy climbing onto a box and then jumping and doing a backwards flip..lol he did it 3-4 times, a real tallented Hammy.. Another video i saw was a Hammy carring a Pen around ,which looked kinda Qute. Does anyone have any funny videos of there hammys doing tricks... If so i liketo see them.. persephone - My son's six month old Syrian hamster died tonight (just recently). She got wet tail it seems on Monday night and his aunt whom he lives with is a vet and pretty much killed her. I'm flabbergasted that she was so stupid as to not get her some wet tail meds to at least try to save her. I picked her up tonight and she was barely alive and died on her way home. I am so disappointed that his aunt is the cause of this meaningless death and am devastated that she has died so young. My poor son will be depressed knowing that she is gone. She was our first hamster and a complete delight to have and her hammy sized hole she has left in our hearts hurts outrageously.

MrSteve - Hi all. ok i got my 2nd Hammy today, a Syrian Female, i wont be mateing her yet awhile untill ive read up on a few books on handling and keeping them Ok here some questions. 1; i got a new cage for her, and the house is totaly crapp, even she wont go in it, it a castle shaped one. Now she made a nest/Bed in the darkest part of th cage under the 2nd level, but after doing that she decided to sleep in the tube leading up to thenext level, why is this, will she come out of this or will he keep sleeping there..? 2: earlier, she made some wineing noise, not sure why, it only lasted a few seconds, sounded a little like crying,? is this cos of her new envoiroment, or is it cost she is inn heat and might be able to smell the male. I did have them next to each other (in seperate cages of course) but i moved her to another part of the room thats when she made the crying sound, i put her back near the male Reggie, and she then seemed fine, but when she went in to the tube she just crashed out and went to sleep, not going to her Bed. So i put her back over to the corner of the room for now, to she if she will handle it, asi cant have them bouth on or near my table as i need some space to..lol I will do some pictures of the Female later in the week,when she settles down, and lets me handle her, as she went a bit crazy in the shop when we was buying her, she screeched and spat out at the shop keeper, lol, when she was being seperated from her 2 sisters. persephone - So I have 2 hamsters that live at my house and my son's hamster (number 3) travels back and forth during the week between my house and his grandparents. What I'm wondering is if anyone knows of any tried and true toys for hamsters. I'm not too concerned with the two female hamsters as they seem content with what they have, but our male, Hammie, bores really easy and will not play with the toys I've bought for him. He is happy to run around in his ball but wants to be in there for hours; which is not normally an issue, but when put back in his cage he goes right to gnawing on the bars and making a huge racket trying to get out. I change out his toys often but nothing seems to satisfy him and the bitterapple products don't stop him from gnawing on the bars and although he has chewing woods he won't touch them and goes right for the bars. It's a little distressing because the other two are not having this problem. He has also gotten bored with his tunnels and maze and won't entered them anymore. I don't think anything health wise is wrong with him, he eats very well and takes water; he loves to be held and sleeps good. He is slender but very active. Thanks!

GamecubeWhiz - This is my first hello on here for a loooong time. Sorry about that. But I really hoped my visit wouldn't be reporting this... If you who remember me from, like, a little less than a year ago, you MAY remember Mosie, my hamster... or not. I didn't post any pics or anything, I don't think. Well, she died today. This morning I got up at 6:30 and was dressing for school when I glimpsed at Mosie's cage. She was sprawled out on the floor, so I kind of froze and went over there, and called her name. She didn't move, so I threw on my shirt and started shrieking for my mom. I bawled for like, a half hour. Well, I have some regrets about keeping her, like how I should've let her run around my house more, but it was her time to go. I had her for about 2 years. So, sadly, now she joins others in that big wheel in the sky. Bye, little furball. :) I'll miss you.

babsygirl2 - Well, my family is moving to NY, but we have tickets for Thursday, so we're going through with it this time :( I can't take my hammies because we can't even take our doggies for a few more months. And that's if my girlies come -cry- So I gave them to a breeder a few days ago, Today I checked back with them and found out that little Rose went before anyone else, maybe a few pups were gone and I think Obaminiqua was gone too. I cried so hard for them even though I was happy someone picked rose up and said to themselves, "Wow the pups are cute, but Rose is so much sweeter and cute, too!" and gave her a loving home. I miss them so much -cry-

MrSteve - Well what can i say.. What a pain he was today,lol 1: dueing the day, every time i know he was a sleep, i decided to have a nap, and just as i was about to drop off, he woke up and started making a noise, this happened like this 4 times during the day. 2: i made him a maze out of some boxes, i do a photo of it some time to show ya the crappy maze i made.lol Anyways when i had finished i waited till he woke up and put him in the maze, he found the first part within 1.5 mins, but he kepted missing a doorway to the end, when he did finaly find it it took him a total of 5.5 mins from start to end. Then he found a cheat way out of the maze/box, but climbing onto the walls and getting out that way, i should of mad it higher.lol, but i think he enjoyed it. 3: he had a sleep after the maze but only a short sleep, he was active most of the day, un-usual for him. i let him out into his ball for 10 mins, then showed my daughter the maze and put Reggie in, this time he was'nt to intresed in the maze, so i put him on the table, this time he found the way back of the TV, which i had to quickly grab him befor he would take a high fall to the ground, i put him in the cage after that and man he he play up, he kepted cummingto the cage door, and chewing the bars, i gave him some bread to try quieten him down, that worked no wmore than 20 seconds, the he stared again. I took him out and put him back in his ball for 5 mins, then back in to the cage, hopeing he will goto his bed, but nope, back at the cage door, chewing again, dam thiswas giving me a headache, so out he came again and back in the ball,which he is in again now at 9:25pm...i just put him back in cage after another 15-mins in ball and still he chewing on the cage bars... Gosh why is he playing up so much today.....lol Well only good thing today was he finaly went in his cage wheel for 10-seconds, while i was laying down with the light off, but as i got up to watch him, he got out..lol so thats it realy he was a bit of a pain today, lets hope he be less of pain tomorrow..... lol steve

MrSteve - Well i decided to get a 2nd Hamster a female this time, so i hopeto mate her with Reggie in a few months time. im just waiting on a few decent books to read up on befor i even attempt to put them together. I rang up the pet shop where i got Reggie from, and they said they wont have any females for 6 weeks, as 1 set has just had babies, and cant sell them till 6 week old, so i rang up another petshop, where we got our fish from, and they said they will have some 6-week old Females in on thursday, so i may get 1 then, and put her in the Tank i have, untill i get another cage. I asked about handling them bouth about the cents,smells,ect ,and if the hampsters will mind being in the same room, pet store guy said, they will be fine, even if cages are near each other, just dont mix them untill i decide to mate them,and to wait at least 2-3 months befor mateing. He also said when i handle 1,say like Reggie, i should wash my hands befor handling the female, or she may give me a bite. but what about the cent on my cloths, i dont wanta be changing cloths every time i handle 1 and the other.lol So any advice on handling them at differant times, and info on how far apart i should keep them from each other as i dont have much room right now,untill i do some more cleaning out of my junk.. .I could put 1 cage under the other, or move my PC down onto the floor and then have 1 on each side of the table, but then again need to sort out some stuff under the table,first befor i move the PC. whens the best time in mateing, and would they be ok to mate from differant broods. (this question i need to know ASAP befor i go get the female. as she will be from a differant little totaly,and younger.) found out that Reggie is less than 6-months old, from the shop i got her from, well he was a differant person i spoke to as the guy who sold me reggie was off work, but the guy said all there Stock they sell is and normaly are less than 6 months old. MrSteve - Hi. Ok ive had REGGIE 5 days now, and since then ive seen him WEE, a few times, but i have not seen him do any POOs, nor seen any in his last beeding when i cleaned the cage out yesterday. Im sure Hampster do poo, but where is it, He has been eating a fair bit, and still no Poo yet.. I have seen on some google search that some Hampster eat there Poo to help with there digestion, is this true, is REGGIE eating his POOs as soon as he does it and is he doing it in his house/Bedding. MrSteve - hi all. well all my fish are now dead, god know what killed them off, think it was the last 2 i brought had somethink wrong with them and passed it on to my other fish, so they all gonners now.. Ok i am thinking of using this tank i had for the fish, i have washed it out with 2 cleaning fluids, Washing up liquid and a detergent, and have left it in the garden to dry off, i may give it another wash out with warm water tomorrow... Question is could i use it for a 2nd Hamster. If so the top has no wholes in it, so would i need to make wholes or will it be ok without cutting wholes in the plastic top.? here is a image of the tank. Ok i only had my Hamster REGGIE for 4 days ,but i clead out his cage and house today, as it started to smell a bit, i may of done wrong, but how ofern should i change it ?.. every week.? every 2 weeks, Every month.?? While i was washing it out with warm water & Fairy liquid, i left him on the table,with the rest of the cage surround, when i got back he was woundering where his house was as he was right where it use to be, lol.. i had to move him so i could put he house back. It made me laugh watching him redo his sleeping bed in his house, LOL, must of took him all 5 mins, and once done he went straight back to sleep, not even a bite to eat, or a drink or fresh water..Just went back to sleep, man he so lazy.. hehehe Maybe when he gets a little older, he may sleep less.? i hope, giving me more time to play with him. Still not got his BALL yet for him to run around in, i did order it 3 days ago on ebay,hopeing it would arrive today, but no show in the post...So hopefully tomorrow. oh another question should a Hamster be barthed,baithed.? or should i just leave him, is there any wet wipes i could use to wipe ,clean him with if he starts to start getting a bit dirty/Smelly.. michaelk - Hi There, I have read much of the forum and found some great help. My issue is this. My Dwarf hamster has had a litter 10 to 12 days ago. I would like to clean the cage a bit but i'm a little worried about stressing the mother. At the same time it really needs to be cleaned up a bit. The pups, 5 in all I think) are roaming about and mom and dad have stopped putting them back in nest, they go back themselves. I have seen them eating nuts and poo and drinking water. At times it looks as if there eyes are open but not fully. Can I clean a bit at this stage? Any other advise would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

MrSteve - Hi all. im steve and i just got today a Hamster, reason why is i wanted somethink fury and nice to hold and stroke,while being alone in the house to stop the boredom while the kids are at school and wife is at work each day. We once owned a guniepig, but had to keep it out side most of the time due to no space in side the house, we had it a couple of years then it died. I always wanted another fury friend so this time i went for a Hamster. the hamster i got today 7/4/2010 cost me £9:50 then the cage, all in one,with wheel, water bottle, little house, sawdust, feed, and betting all cost me in total just under £40, not a bad deal, the cage was £25:00 alone.. im naming my hamster 'Reggie' as he is a male, and is a name of one of my favorite passed away uncles.. Ok some questions. 1: if im to give reggie some carrots, do i need to wash and peal the first.? 2: Can i give it Apple, and Peace, pears. 3: what green stuff can i give it, apart from grass.as i hear Gabbage and greens may make it get diarrhea,which i dont want my little fellow to get. 4: How offern should i change the sawdust and bedding in his little house. 5: How offern do they sleep, how long do they sleep for each day, ive had Reggie for about 1 hour and already he is in his house sleeping i think. (I HOPE) 6: How offern should i pick him up and how long for each day as i sont want to tier him out to much. 7:how do i know if and when he is un well.? 8: what is a good toy to get him to play in when out of the cage. 9: do hamsters get fleas,mites,bugs easy,how do i know and what do i need to do to cure them of the bugs. 10: though he is in my compter room, and we dont have much grass in our garden coz the wife keeps digging up what there is to plant veggies, should i put him in the garden for some fresh air time to time but keep him in the cage or will he be ok kepted in my room. 11: If there a Hamster pet insurance in the uk that helps towards pet bills. if so is it worth getting.. if my Hamster does get ill,(Which i hope he wont) i need to cover the pet bills some how, as i hear thay can be exspensive. 12:how long do Hamster live for..?? i dont want him to die after 6-12 months.. i have been told,and seen on the internet,that people have had hamsters upto 6 years, is this true.? ok sorry there a lot of questions but as this is my first hamster i need to know how to look after the little guy,and keep him healthy. kay2088 - Hi everyone, My hamster has a respiratory illness (at least what I think is one). She started losing weight a little while ago and last night she was making weird breathing noises (sort of like wheezing, it sounded like sneezing, but was constant). She's also been sleeping with her mouth open to breathe. I took her to the vet today. They said she probably has a respiratory illness. I don't have the money to get an x-ray for her (about $200, and I imagine an x-ray of the lungs will just confirm what I already know). I did buy the antibiotics and the critical care food (it's fruity stuff that you mix with water to make a paste, it's apparently really healthy, and it smells/probably tastes nice). My question at this point is how I make her comfortable? One of her eyes is now shut, it looks like there may be a bit of discharge. I have another hamster in the cage with her, but they're getting along fine. They usually do (they're campbell's dwarves from the same litter). I just feel so horrible because she looks incredibly uncomfortable. It's obviously hard for her to breathe, she probably can't really see, and she's just sorta moping in the one spot. I fear the pricey visit to the vet/antibiotics may be in vain (and actually may have made it worse because she was so stressed out). I know it's bad to think this way, but she really does look like she's going to pass away soon. So what I can I do for the time being to make her more comfortable? It's very heartbreaking. She's only 5 months old. I tried administering the antibiotic, but I had a lot of trouble. I'm going to try directly putting it in her mouth with a plastic syringe later, mixed with some flavoured water (not fizzy). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't even remember if I told you that the hamster buddy I bought rose was pregnant and had a happy litter of seven pups that all lived, we kept 1 and then the baby we kept had pups. The grandma of these pups is named Barakisha and the new mommy is Obaminiqua. Obaminiqua had nine pups! Wow! One is giant, 2 times the size of the others. persephone - One of our pups died this morning. The other night it looked like he had gotten a head injury because he was bleeding from his mouth and nose. I'm not too sure what happened, but left him to mom to tend too and he was refusing to eat. Became skin and bone. So I pulled him out last night after talking to our vet and started to feed him a formula substitute. It looked like after 2 feedings that he was perking up and getting more energy and when I woke for his 4 a.m. feeding he was gone. We are very upset over his loss. He was one of the pups that we where going to keep. We hadn't even named him yet. He was only 13 days old. :(

jesickag - i just cleaned out my hamsters cage. i placed them each in a seperate carboard box for a few minutes while doing so, The syrian Female had a milky looking substance, runny but thicker than urine in the box when i took her out. it was probably about a half a teaspoon. I am really worried.

Bella - Well I lost my peanut last week, but I found two 3 month old Syrian " Black Bear" hamsters at a local pet store so I brought one home last week and went back and got her sister on Friday. Baby and Dot now have a new home(s). Baby is smaller and a dynamo and tries to climb her water bottle to get out. Dot is chubbier and shy, she also loves to burrow, I think she thinks that she is a gopher. Very interesting duo. I have them in separate bins, should I have them in separate rooms? Anyway, wish me luck in my new endeavor.

Bella - Lost my Syrian Black Bear Hamster Peanut last week. One day she is fine and the next day I find a lump on the left side of her chin. Waited about 3 days and took her to the vet, he said we could try some antibiotics otherwise he would need to anesthetize her and lance it $$$$. I tried the antibiotics over 7 days with no change and it got worse. She was grooming and active when I held her but she did not run on her wheel like she used to and sleep a lot more so I knew something was definitely not right. Took her to a vet closer to home and when they looked at her they found a large mass also in her abdomen and the prognosis was not positive no matter what i did. $245 to do an ultra sound and to pull tissue from the masses, which if came back positive or negative would lead to additional costs and uncertain outcome or let her go for as long as she was able to, I don' like my animals to suffer so I agonized over it but had them put her down. With my permission they did an autopsy and found that the tumor actually fractured her jaw and there was a large tumor attached to her liver/intestine. The vet said I did the right thing and I am more than comfortable with my decision. I felt really bad that she had a fractured jaw and I did not know how long I put her through that. These little creatures just don't seem to show pain. RIP Peanut

KCHammie - Ok so today we went to our local pet store and bought 2 dwarf Chameleon hamsters for my daughter. The pet store had written on the cage Chameleon Hamsters "We Change Color" ... ok so i have used every search engine to try and find out just what the "Chameleon" hamsters are and can't find anything on them. Can anyone give me some info or ideas as to what we really have here? I would say Winter Whites, considering they are mostly white with a touch of gray, but not sure. Any help is greatly appreciated. hamster17 - My hamster George doesn't eat very much. I don't mean he doesn't eat. I just mean that he doesn't eat as much as my other hammies did. I give him one Forti Diet thing and a Yogert Drop per day so I don't think it's that he's over fed. Should I be worried?

Driven - Today I got Maestro out of his cage and noticed he has a pretty big bald spot behind his left ear. It was never there before. It isn't red and it doesn't look like it's been scratched at. It is a perfect pink color and smooth not flakey so I don't think it would be from mites? He is still a baby so it isn't from old age. I don't know what could be wrong? I use aspen shavings and we've had him for 3 weeks and haven't had any problems before now so I would be confused it if it was an skin irritation or allergic reaction to the aspen. He is his normal self. He's in his ball right now going all over the house as usual. He seems happy.

libbyoc - Hello. I have had three Teddy Bear hamsters in the past and just yesterday my mom let me buy another hamster. All three of my teddy bear hamsters lived passed age 5 and were very tame. I was a little frustrated when I brought my new Robo Dwarf home. He is so skittsh and small! I feel so bad when he runs from me. I've been trying to give him treats so he gets used to me but he hides and waits for me to put the treat down and step back before he sniffs at it. I was wondering if I can do something more to help make him get used to me. I'm sure he's still a little nervous from the move he made form the petstore to my home. Also, he was the last robo dwarf at the petstore but I hear they prefer to be housed with more of their kind (not like the teddy bear hamsters). I was wondering if I should buy another robo dwarf to keep him company. I'm just a little concerned because I'd have to go to another store to get one. Thank you very much! -Libby

Allycat - Hi all! Well...in the past, like, 15 minutes, a lot has happened. I was filling up my Robo's waterbottle when I dropped it. It shattered and water spilled everywhere. I was barefoot so a carefully stepped away when I relized my white mouse was out of her cage. How? I have no idea. So I had to step around the glass again, barefoot, to put her back. To make things worst, I have a fever and strep throat. But the point of all this is that I now have no water for my hamster. What should I do?

brownwhite22 - This afternoon, i was making a video called "my hamsters".... i showed my latest hamster first then my oldest, Brownie Boy... i touched him. then...he was not dead, he had some kind of yellowish brownish liquid at the side of his mouth...is that vomit?? so then i stopped the video and looked at him...he returned sleeping.. a few minutes later, i heard some noises that sounds like cage biting...i checked on Brownie Boy since he was the one whose mostly doing that... he was biting the edge of the cage, as if he wants to get out trough underground method...then i called him and he looked at me... after stopping the cage biting insanity, (i was still in front of the cage) i heard chattering teeth...like when you're in a cold pool freezing and your teeth clicks togedah... it was brownie boy's teeth...he looks like he's tired. is he cold? is he sick? oh and one more thing is that it is kinda hot in our country so he couldnt be cold........ please answer immidiately so i can cure already...if he's sick. :) i hope he's not close to death!! :( :( :( :( -cry- -cry-

Allycat - Hi all! Last night we had a little surprise.... I went down stairs with my sister (another story...) and I went over to check on my babies. My mousie, Eloise, was awake but my hammies, Sammy and Mocha, were asleep--or so I thought. I didn't actually see them but I had cleaned their cages that day so they were probably tired. Then I heard my sister. She yelled over to me that one of my hamsters is running on the kitchen floor. I ran over to see who and saw Mocha crawling all over the floor. I ran to get his carrier cage (in the next room) and came back to see that my sister had slipped a jar over him. As she took off the jar, he crawled into the carrier cage. I couldn't see anything wrong with the normal cage but somehow Mocha escaped. I put him in his old cage. It was a glass aquarium so it would be much harder for him to escape. He is safe but I still don't know how he got out! It was a crittertrail cage and it had several tube. Any ideas? Allycat

Skattikat - I bought my 5 year old daughter a male hamster at around 7 weeks old, about 3/4 weeks ago. She absolutely adores Nibbles, in fact the whole family does. Tonight we noticed that Nibbles was bleeding from underneath and I wondered if Nibbles was in fact a female. Do female hamster have a "season" or what could cause a male hamster to bleed. I am very worried about him/her and my daughter would be devastated if anything was wrong. On the whole Nibbles seems well enough and it was only a small amount of blood but nonetheless very worried about it. Any advice/info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

They escaped....their cage was soooo uber un-escapable but they still escaped coz my sis forgot the lock (I Hate Her).......... So then, they didn't survive our house and then the nxt nxt nxt mornin' it became smelly like a dead rat..... Then I saw them....That's it now, I have 7 hammies...going for 5 coz my dad said i should give a pair for my cousin's bday........... I'm soooo missing them! Nibbles95 - Hey! Well my sisters hamster, Snuggles has not been himself lately. I have no idea what is going on. Before I get on to the main details I'll give you all the info about Snuggles that I know of. Well Snuggles was given to my little sister Savannah on christmas in any regular Pet Land box. We gave him my hamster, Nibbles' aquarium to enjoy life in. He has gone through a few rough times since. But a really bad one was when my sister's friend pushed his ball, which contained Snuggles down our curved slide. Later we saw him limping and in a hurt mood.-ouch- But now he is sneezing so much! I need help! HNH! ( hamster not healthy! ) Please hurry. One thing, my mom will not let me take a hamster to the vet unless it is super urgent another thing I should mention my sister is sick but is still holding him. I will keep you updated.

likealemon - okey, hai. I'm probably in the majority here, but i have never had a good experience with a store bought hamster, from pet co, pet smart, etc. they're always poorly mannered and short tempered. And i've lost 3 store hamsters to stress related illnesses, but none of my own bred hamsters or those from local small business stores have had such problems with temperament or illness, thought on this?

hammie1282 - So I got the Ovo Loft (the big long one) and I just got the Suite and have made the coolest cage! But she's still trying to get through one of the "windows" that doesn't go anywhere. She has chewy sticks and lots of stuff, but she just won't give it up, any idea how to stop this? Is chewing on plastic ok for her teeth? Thanks! Anna :)

joelcool - I made a new hamster house that Vanilla loves! These are the steps to make one. 1. Get an empty and cleaned out milk jug or something similar and cut about four to five inches off the bottom of it. Driven - We've had Maestro for 4 days now and all he has been doing is hiding in his little house inside of his cage and really never coming out. Even at night when I thought hamsters are supposed to be active? Is this normal? I just hope he is ok. I thought he would be going around his cage more and maybe on his wheel and through the tube I have in there for him but he just puts himself in the little house and baracades the door and doesn't come out.

StBarb - Hello! I bought a dwarf hamster today, and got a wire hamster cage. The pet store chap said that these should be fine for a dwarf hamster, but of course now I'm worried (yeah, I know, I wish I'd read this site before as I would have saved some money and made a bin cage! Ho hum!). Logically, it should be fine. I don't think he can fit through the bars as they are quite close together - I just have visions of coming home and finding him dead after trying to get through the bars and getting stuck! I've seen some other websites that say wire bar cages are ok, and others that say no. Lemmywinks (the hamsters name) is small, but not that small. I watched him when I first put him in his cage and he was running around and it doesn't seem that he could escape. But then again, if he wanted to squish his way through he may. Any advice would be great, including "Stop worrying!" or "Well, you'll just have to find out!"

I have no other males at the maturity line. She's also fat everywhere else, other then the lower stomach, so we won't have a litter of pups anytime soon. To busy with my 2 wk old pups. She still has seven, so far I have at least three signed up for adoption. My dad's best friend wants 2 because he loves rodents, and snakes, but doesn't have any snakes right now, I wouldn't let him have any if I thought he had snakes. and my mom's friend wants one, but I can convince her for more, maybe. Then my friend can have one if she keeps her room clean for 2 wks, which today I can ask her mom! Any way, Taylor's chubbiness is scaring me. She runs and eats like any normal dwarf. I worry she could get sick or something. Help!

I noticed WhiteWhite was asleep on his corner. Since BrownieBoy didn't like some, I tapped WhiteWhite to see if he would like some. He was cold. He was not that soft anymore. He was hard. I looked for signs of breathing... None. It only meant one thing. He's dead. I started to cry. I wanted to yell but it is morning. Then when my dad came down from the stairs, I told him. He said he may be old. But to me, he is still my baby. -cry- I cried and cried and cried. He was so special. He was the one that I loved. I love you, White.... hamfun - Hi. I am active in local animal rescue. A woman brought me a Chinese dwarf hamster that was cruelly kept in a small cage for bird rehab. I named him Pip. I took him to the vet. He has metabolic bone disease, cage paralysis & suffering from malnutrition/dehydration. He's 3 mos old. The vet has been giving him daily calcium/vit D & E injections. I've had him since Fri. I give him calcium food preparation from vet every 2 hrs. Pip's legs are weak from MBD. His back is hunched from small cage. I was wondering if anyone can give additional advice. I have no experience with hamsters. pip is the sweetest little guy & I'm hoping he will survive.

Florentin - I bought our 4-year-old daughter two russian dwarfs for Christmas. Of course, the guy at Petland did not check the sex correctly, and of course, I trusted him. This morning, there were babies in the cage. The mom was sitting on them, to protect them from the dad, I guess. We've had hamsters forever, but never babies. I have a lot of catching up to do on learning about how to deal with this. I'll try to add photos later this week.

At the pet store where I want to get my dwarf hamsters they have a big glass enclosure with about 30 dwarfs together. I called and talked to a person that worked there and he told me that I should not keep 2 in the same cage. I am getting a 10 gal tank and I really wanted 2 hamsters. If I go there and I see that 2 seem to be getting along pretty well, do you think it would be ok to have them together? I know it is important to have the same sex if having 2 together because I don't plan on breeding right now and it is better to have 2 females than 2 males because males are more territorial. I looked around online at answers to other people asking this question but no one came out and asked about having 2 together that were from the same encloser to start with. So that is my question. Laelis - My hammie's acting odd...She runs around with her tail up, and she does this only if the cage isn't clean and it's due for a cleaning, but it's clean. She also stops in her "potty" spot, and does the dog thing, but doesn't go to the bathroom. (I don't mean she doesn't go to the bathroom at all, she does, but she acts like she's about to go, but then doesn't, and the next time she does.) She runs around and is being overly hyperactive. If she'll start bouncing off the fishtank's walls it honestly wouldn't surprise me...This is acting overly hyper, not her normal happy hammie (I have black teddybear) But her dragging her butt...like she has worms (if she were a dog) it worries me. She has a twin (in a different tank) and they have the same food and everything, but Coco (Snuffle's twin) is normal, and only Snuffles's acting odd...Does she have something? On another note, I was wondering where I could find hammie "toys" the only stores around me are Petco and PetsMart...I couldn't find any hammie toys in Petco...they only have ferret toys... Why the toys? They keep chewing on their metal wheelsand their plastic carriage/home...Snuffle doesn't like cherry sticks, Coco is kind of ok with them. They do eat pretzel doe thing.

As this is my first hamster I am a little worried about some of his behaviour, and wondered if I could have some advice? He's extremely nervous of me, which I thought was normal, but it's got to the stage where he very rarely comes out of his tube if I'm in the room. He sleeps in there, and only ventures out in short amounts for water. I've managed to handle him every night so far, and he hasn't bitten, but is very skittish. He's taking treats out of my hands now, which was a mini success a few nights ago! He's eating normally and seems healthy, so doesn't seem ill. Am I doing the rights things and will he become less scared over time, or is there something I need to be doing to help him?

freebie_10 - Hi, We noticed a few days ago that one of our hammie has a big tummy, since she is a girl we assumed that she is pregnant, I was planning to clean the cage before she gives birth, so I planned it for the next day. So the nest day I was planning to clean the cage after work but got invited by our friends to dinner so when we got back my son asked me what are the pink thingies on the floor, so when I looked it was small hammies squirming on the floor, I called my wife and she picked up the babies using a plastic spoon, so we are getting ready to put them back in the cage, when I saw two little babies not moving anymore in the cage one has half his body and the other was missing its legs, so I need to clean the cage we put the mommy hamy to a box with some bedding and the daddy hamy on another we put the babies together with mommy hamie and gave them food and water, after I cleaned the cage we put them back except the daddy hammie, after a few minutes I checked to see if the mommy hamy was doing ok, but to my surprise she was eating her babies, so I was disappointed, I went to sleep since the cage is clean and have food and water and assumed that all the babies are gone. In the morning when I was feeding the mommy I saw one pup still moving around, so I was careful not to startle the hammies, after she ate the food I still saw the baby but at night time I could not see the babies anymore, and there is no trace of it. I think the mommy hamy killed them all. My question is what did we do wrong? Why is it that she killed all of them? Will she do it again? 5 pups gone in just a 2 days, quite a disappointment.

LynnDe - Hi! I just brought home what the store describes as a long hair syrian (black and white and so very, very sweet - on the tiny side). First - right next to her cage was another cage labeled "teddy bear hamsters" - aren't long haired syrians and "teddy bears" the same thing? Anyway - my question - the minute I opened the little box, she started to squeal. Now, this is only the 2nd hamster I've ever owned but I don't recall such a noise. Is this fear? She's also tried to bite - I'm sure scooping her up to put her in the new cage was a No, No on my part. At any rate, did I pick the wrong little cutie or can this just be normal behavior for her first day in her new home? I've left her alone since I got her (couple hours ago). I moved her cage to see her and she started to squeal again. So, what is the best thing to do? I hope she settles in? Should I just leave the cage in one spot, unmoved for a couple days before I try to pick her up again? Or is it possible that I picked a hamster that is less likely to want human contact? CrescentScar - Hi, my girlfriend and I got a great little Chinese "Dwarf" Hamster in December from PetSmart, and he's great. Very friendly, loves to chill out with us on the couch, run in his wheel, and explore the cardboard kingdom I built him. Normally, we feed him 1-2 1-teaspoons of Nutriphase hamster food a day. As of late, he's started to empty the bowl more frequently, and he looks just a bit chubbier than before. Is this normal, or should we scale him back to just one scoop a day? Thank you for any help!

brownwhite22 - my hamster Brite is acting really wierd.... When i bring her out of the cage and touch her, she freezes then her tail goes up and she shakes a little... I've had her since January and i'm terrified if she's sick-cry- please!!! helppppp meeeeee!!!!!!!!!

Brownbrown(as you remember, i posted Rip brownbrown) had her 3rd batch of pups. when they grew up-paws- , i gave a pair to my friend. she named them browny and whitey (because of their color) after a few months, she told me whitey gave birth then now, i asked if i could adopt a pair when they grow up and she said ok! -hoppy- now i'm gonna get 2 new hammies and i'm gonna name them....i dunno-?- , u guys give me a name...

brownwhite22 - U guys know WhiteWhite the Syrian hammy and the father of Brownieboy...well just a while a go, I fed him Banana on a stick using my hands to cut small pieces of banana on the stick. Then While I was getting like the 5th or i think 4th piece with the stick pointing up, Whitewhite panicked and ran as fast as he could then hid in my dad's tool thingies. Then he started some 4 or 5 hiccups and hid back..everytime i touched him, he hid back to that toolbox. Then I called his name and their special call like a lizard. So he came out and then I got him. I put him where he was when I was feeding him bananas, the top of his cage and beside him was a little house that he plays with and he hid again.. The top door of the cage was open so he jumped back..when i touched him that time, he was calm.. Is he scared of the stick? Or something else behind me? Did he see a ghost? Did he see my lil' sis (LOL)? I'm very worried about him :( Heeeelp meee!! Anyone?? I was so nervous! Ya think he still loves me?? Reply immediately!! I need it now!!!! Heeeeelllppp!!!

rluck - I've got four four week old dwarf hamster pups, two males and two females. I'm looking for a straight answer regarding whether I need to separate the mother from the females. I've read it both ways so at this point I'm quite confused. Ideally I'd like to keep them with mom so that she has some company as she is quite social.

babsygirl2 - Hi guys, as you know I adopted a ham from the pet store Wednesday. Named her Zoey, but I'm just gonna call her "Zoe" Well, today, I cleaned four cages, unfortunately, the intro didn't plan right, so I have four cages, I'm perfectly fine cleaning the cages. :) Kay, so I cleaned her cage first. Turns out, I bought a pregnant hamster! 2 bulges on her hips and a pear shape tell me. I've got homes lined up for the pups to be. I'm 99.9999 percent sure. I'm happy. Maybe that's why Zoe attacked Rose and Taylor? Because she is preg. and vicious, is that a possibility? Also, If you listen closely, you can here her squeaking. Is this a problem? For no reason she does this. Thanks guys!
