Hamster Meds

By rascal
Unfortunately, sometimes our little guys need more than our tender loving care. Finding a vet in your area with enough knowledge and experience with rodent care can be frustrating, so it’s a really good idea to call around before you encounter any problems. And not all problems require a vet’s attention, i.e. a little bit of blood in your female hamster’s cage means she’s in estrous, and a little scratch can easily be taken care of with Neosporin or other triple antibiotic ointment.

If it is absolutely necessary to go to the vet, you should write down all of your hamster’s symptoms, and make a list of the possible causes and treatments (if you can find them). You should also take along a list of medicines that are safe.

A list of some safe meds:

  • Bacitracin
  • Cephaloridine (Loridine)
  • Chlorampenicol Palmitate (Chloromycetin)
  • Chloramphenicol Succinate (Chloromycetin)
  • Gentamicin (Gentocin)
  • Enrofloxacin (Baytril) ‡has proven effective against Wet Tail ‡Shouldn't be given to Nursing or Pregnant hamster
  • Griseofulvin (Fulvicin U/F)
  • Metronidazole
  • Neomycin (Biosol)
  • Neomycin Sulfate Oxytetracycline (Liquamycin)
  • Septra
  • Sulfamethazine
  • Sulfamerazine
  • Sulfaquinoxaline (Sulquin)
  • Tribrissen
  • Tylosin

A list of toxic meds: Never accept a prescription for any of the following for your hamster!

  • Amoxicillin
  • Ampicillin (Polyflex)
  • Clindamycin (Cleocin)
  • Erythromycin
  • Lincomycin (Lincocin)
  • Penicillin
  • Penicillin/Benzathin/Procaine (Bicillin, Flocillin)
  • Penicillin Procaine (Azimycin)
  • Streptomycin (Biotec)
  • Tetracyclines
*Never accept a prescription of tetracycline or penicillins (any antibiotic ending in "-illin"). Even the topical form can be deadly to your hamster.
